1st Session Went Well Thanks Everyone

Post by Zardnaar »

Last night I sat down and started running Assault on Blacktooth Ridge. Suffice to say I think the session went well even if I was not 100% sure about the rules. My players were Pathfinder players and it did not take them to long to figure things out.

Attribute checks seemed a little strange to them but it was';t long before they were improvising most of the 3rd ed type skill checks. Once they figured out opposed rolls were not used they got a bit braver with things like sneaking around and the assassin managed to death attack 2/3 targets with Kruggle surviving his death attack in his lair.

Form the DM PoV I had a lot of fun. Very simple game to run roughly about the same complexity as ACKs and Myth and Magic. Easier to run than 3rd ed and different enough to be interesting. d20ised AD&D monsters is also nice.

Assault on Blacktooth Ridge I think is a very well designed adventure. A nice mixture of exploration and dungeon delving IMHO. The Isle of Dread may be a bit to much exploration, The Temple of Elemental Evil a bit to much dungeon IMHO if you get what I mean. A1 is about right and I dressed up Botkinburg and added some NPCs, factions etc. I used the Gods and Monsters books for inspiration on what to give my Clerics as we had a Cleric of Gorum a war god from Paizo's Golarion setting (+2 strength btw was the ability).

My players enjoyed the session, did not mind the rules to much and we should be playing again next week. I let them start at level 2 as we are very sick of level 1 regardless of the edition/game over the last 10-20 years.

The rules are easy. Its either an attack roll or a SIEGE check, CL is usually the HD/level of the opponent, levels always get added to all saves, as well as any skill check, unless the "skill" in question is a Class skill. This is the only time level is not added, you have to be of the class with the skill in question to add level. Thats it in a nutshell, other than Grappling. Grappling is probably the most complex set of rules the game has, and even it is pretty easy once you work through it a time or three.

So yeah, nice and easy to run, so you can put a lot more thought and energy into running your story and playing your NPC's. Soon the rules will feel like they are second nature, and the fun will get even better. C&C is great because even as the CK you feel like your playing a game again. Your more a story teller than a rules guru. The "game" has once again become about having fun, on both sides of the screen.

So I hope you go on to have as much fun as I have had. More, if its possible.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

one could say an attack roll is a siege roll, but you add teh attack bonus based on class rather than your level, and the target number is the enemy's AC instead of your CB... (which makes it, technically, not a siege roll.... but ... um. you get the idea) ^_^

Anyway, glad it went well!
