What is going on in the picture on p.52 of the PHB

On p. 52 of PHB 6, or in any edition I guess, the picture next to the gnome, what is happening in that picture? I can't figure it out.

It looks like an ogre or something is peeling a bandage off the bar wench's knee while the gnome looks on in surprise.

Well, it's a Peter Bradley piece. Maybe there's a story behind it. Peter?

I don't think it's bandages. I think it's her skirt.

Here is what I see with my old eyes:
1) The Elven barmaid is walking to the right in the picture, whilst turning back to look up at the ogre (half orc?)
2) He (ogre/half-orc) has something in his hand
3) If you look at the skirt, you see that her right leg had a 3-tiered skirt on it
4) Her left leg and buttocks have only the top tier of the skirt covering them
5) The orge (half orc?) seems to be snickering as though he's pulled a funny prank, or it's a "whoops, didn't know that would happen" sheepish grin
6) The gnome agrees it's surprising
7) The stuff in his hand is longish and seems to have more than the thin piece attached to it; that piece looks like it is behind the gnome's face/head/hand

So my conclusion is that the ogre/half-orc pulled the bottom of the skirt off of the Elven bar wench, probably he just wanted to see her knickers.

It also appears she is about to backhand him.

I'm not Peter, but the ogre used his sword to lift the elven barmaid's dress so the gnome could see her knickers and her legs. Sir gnome approves of the view. The barmaid is apprehensive with a 7' tall ogre nearby.

Well, I looked at it for a while with my magnifying glass, and there is a hint of a sword or dagger hilt maybe, but i think I missed the skirt in the shadow, the ogre is just lifting her skirt. Maybe it's because she was concealing a blade, but it's not obvious. Anyway, I am past that.

Now I want to know more about the ghostly face in the upper left corner. Oooooooh.

I always thought it was a Half-orc as well. Very different than other fantasy presentations of both the Half-Orc and Gnome. both of which I like and it provides an iconic image of them.

Would love to see at some point a races/classes iconic poster or picture in 7th Printing of the PHB using these. Kind of like the how WOTC did in the 3.5 D&D PHB.

I'd say page 19 is an orc.
not a playable race, but it looks like an orc to me.

Pg 19 and pg 52 are both half-orcs, in my opinion...
