Cut a table made in Microsoft Word and paste it in a topic field? I have a bunch of characters I'd like to paste, but the format is not working.

Not really. In this regard Board s/w hasn't progressed since the mid 90's. I usually make a jpg file and upload it to the thread.

MS Word into a pdf --> Snapshot (in acrobat reader) saved as a jpg via MS Paint

I can't figure that out either. Is there something a complete idiot using antiquated computing equipment and having no funds to purchase things can do...?

Assuming your system isn't too old, this is free, legal, and will probably give you the tools you need...

I have libreoffice. Does it have a text to pdf (which I guess is what I need) tool?

Crom! grumble, grumble...

And Mr. Bore, whilst I have thine attentions- have you a link to a better virus scan for Windows XP than Zone Alarms (which does not seem to scan anymore)... I understand it that you are a computomancer (not that I trust such, mind you).

I use OpenOffice to do it now. Is LibreOffice similar?

Pretty much, I just like the interface of Libre better, but I have Open Office as well.

Yes, it does directly convert to PDF, I was doing it myself last night with some stuff I was scanning.

I use primoPDF. It will allow any of your programs to print to PDF. It's free.

Cool programs- thanks for recommending them!

I have my characters in pdf, but they still aren't uploading. Suggestions?

Now if someone knows a good free antivirus for Windows XP...

How are you trying to "upload" them?

Also, the best antivirus for XP is probably to unplug that little network cable in the back of the PC. :)

I don't use antivirus because it slows the PC down so bad. But use whatever you like if you want one. But more importantly than that, if you do 3 things, you'll cut down your virus issues by about 95%

1. Never use your windows day to day with Admin privileges. Create a normal user account and if you need to make system changes in XP (install software or format a drive for example), you'll just need to log off as your normal user and log back on as admin. In Vista onward you'll simply be prompted to enter the admin password. Most nasty viruses need admin rights to do real damage. You prevent that by not running as admin day to day.
2. Never, under any circumstances, ever, EVER use Windows mail software. This includes Outlook, outlook express, and Windows Mail. They are virus magnets and it would take me a long time to explain why. Use Thunderbird instead, or Gmail. If you can't set it up, find someone who can. It's better in every way. The only downside is that a few rare people using outlook express might occasionally send you attachments you can't open. Tell those people to get a real email client.
3. Never, under any circumstances should you use Internet Explorer. For the same reasons you should never use Outlook. Instead use Firefox, or Chrome.

The site won't take pdf's. While in acrobat reader click on Edit and select Snapshot. Use it to select an area to copy. (it will save the image to your clipboard). Open MSPaint and choose Paste. Save file as a jpg. Upload the jpg to the site.

HOw does one "upload a jpg to the site" with the intent of posting it here? I never tried this before but just now realize (in trying to help the OP) that I seem unable to do so with any type of file as well. I can't find anything on the forum, or in my user settings. I must be looking in the wrong place or something.

When you start a thread or are in reply mode scroll down until you see the Upload attachment section.
Click on Browse button to select file from computer.
Then click on "Add the file" button about an inch down from that. A pop up should quickly appear uploading the file. It disappears when done.
Now a line right below the window where you can type text appears labeled "Attachments". It will show the name of the file you uploaded and to the right in faint lettering is a button called, Place Inline. Position your cursor where you want the picture in the text and click it.

It then creates a board code line with the name of the file.

Ok, yes, I was looking in the wrong place. Everywhere but where I should have been. :( Thanks for the info Arduin!
And, yes, I can confirm, it won't allow PDFs for me either, but will allow JPGs.

It is NOT an intuitive process by any means. (gif, jpeg, jpg & png are it I think)
