I honestly think it's too situational to really say with any certainty. In one situation, a high level wizard will seem alike a god. In another, they're utterly weak and easily dispatched. Similarly, fighters have weak points and incredible strengths.

But more importantly, I think you have to view the character as a whole and as part of a world. Ok, so let's say we're trying to see which is more powerful. What if I make this scenario? I'll give you a level 1 fighter, or a level 1 wizard. Alone. Now, it's your job to get them to max level. Alone. No assistance. No group. Which one will be more powerful? I would say, it would be the fighter, because the wizard would almost certainly be dead. But I think people are making assumptions that both classes have survived. But that's an assumption that breaks the comparison, because survivability is a huge part of the equation. If you just assume they both survived, you've already removed one of the main advantages of the fighter. It would be similar to assuming that all enemies are immune to fire. This would have a devastating effect on the wizard but a smaller impact on the fighter.

Also, what time of day? Have they been harried? Against a horde of zombies? Against a Rakshasa? If the Wizard can't get a good rest, he's only strong for a day. But the fighter doesn't have near the limitations in that regard. But wizards have AoE that is amazing.

Honestly, I don't think there is one more powerful than the other, simply because they both need each other too much.

You know what's most powerful? A well balanced party. Nothing can compare.

Having said all that, I do kind of enjoy these kind of threads, even if there can never be much in the way of resolution.

Another good point.

Most powerful class eh?

First off that is a moot point
The player is the deciding point in everything.

How the class is played is most important...
Situation concerns are paramount because each class shines in a distinct way and has its use.

Multi class characters tend to be more survivable.
