Player knowledge

Post by Kayolan »

Sometimes I just like to let the players look up magic items in-game and then tell ME what they are all about and how they work. The CK shouldn't have to do this on his own. :)

I've done that a few times myself.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Sometimes I just like to relax a little, and let the players look up stuff that is supposed to be CK only territory. Obviously this is just for magic items that are "official", i.e. present in the M&T and so on, not for the CK-created stuff. The thing is, all the people I play C&C with are CKs as well as players, so it's kind of hard for us not to be at least in a partial CK mode during a game. Rather than fight against this tendency, I think it's better to let it happen when it can happen.

I look at it as rolling randomly for the CK, since I have no idea what they will chose. I have to admit I was surprised that they kept their choices reasonable. I figured they would be going for the Staff of the Magi, Feather Edged Swords, etc....

I sometimes just say "you found a magic item. What does it do?" And whatever they say is what it does. If I can't handle what my players want, I probably shouldn't be their DM.

Yeah agreed. I mean, it is a COLLABORATIVE story right?

Never thought about doing it this way, but I kinda dig the idea. Might have to try this out.

I'm more than thankful to my players helping me with certain aspects of the game since I have such a bad memory. Spells and magic items for sure and mebbe a few other things.

My players have open knowledge of the M&T, and obviously the PHB. We don't really use any other C&C books in that way, so nothing to worry about there. But after a while, I started introducing magic items into the game that did not work like the ones found in the M&T, you know, to keep them guessing.

I like that mindset ... I don't think I've heard it put that way before but I agree.

I agree, but does it depend on the maturity level and mind set of the party? It's one thing to open this up to a party that won't abuse it, it's another if the party is min/maxers.

How would you handle a group like that ... outside of not playing with them.
