Multi-Class Question

Post by Daniel »

Ok, sat and created a few dozen characters to help me make sure I was understanding the various dynamics. When I went to create a multi-class I came across a question that made me wonder if I was doing it right.

As I understood the XP progression for multi-class, the formula would be:

(XP needed for class #1)+(XP needed for class #2)+(additional XP cost)

So if I wanted to have a Fighter/Wizard go to 2nd level it would be:

2001 (fighter) + 1251 (wizard) + 200 (additional for 2 classes) = 3452

But the example in the Player's Handbook states "A fighter/wizard advancing to 2nd level must acquire 4,801 experience points."

Now even if I doubled the "additional XP" and added 200 per class that would still only take me to 3652 (2001+1251+400). How did it get to 4801?

What am I missing?

Its Troll Math, which involves pulling random numbers out of ones own arse and sticking them where they don't belong.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

Wizard needs 2601. You are reading the table for the class on the previous page.

Yep, that is what I was doing. I have got to stop doing this stuff as midnight.

EDIT: I forgot to say how much I miss the XP costs being different fro various classes. While ti is easy when they all cost the same, I think it does carry a greater burden to have to balance the classes 100% and I just don't think that can be done. Better to mix them up and let the chips fall where they may.

Class and a half and multi-class work fairly well, we have a monk-illusionist, a fighter-mage, a cleric-ranger, and a monk-assassin the later being class and a half. All work well.
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.

I prefer to ditch multi-class, class-and-a-half, and dual class characters. Instead, I just use my own system to determine XP requirements, and then I ignore them as I do not use XP anymore, rather a goal-driven level thing.

Pretty sure the rules, strangely, are fairly straightforward with little ambiguity. But, that might just be my brain tricking me. I know, they're classed with illusionist!

Interesting thoughts. I will have to remember them for later, after I have played and run the game as written and I am ready to tweak the rules.
