Costs of Living

Anyone use any handy, consolidated costs of living charges that can be leveraged on PC's once a month to draw down on their funds and simulate upkeep? I want to do something that is aligned with the assumed economy in C&C.

Figure out how much food they eat each month and then multiply by 3.

That's a really good forumla, because if they like to eat well they probably "live well" in other ways too.

Alternatively, figure out the cost of room & board for one day, and multiply by 45. (30 days, plus 50% for misc. other costs).

I have "levels" of comfort, like "street". "aristocrat" and whatnot which are leveraged against the socio-economic classes. I then ask: which do you want to be at? They then spend gold based on their answers, each one different than the other, so, for example, a cleric can pay a lot more than a ranger.

Great way to do it.

I'll also let them go indebt up to their eye teeth. Aka a foppish rouge living very well, then 2 months down the road, the land lord, the husband/father of girl XY&Z looking for him, & the loan shark starting to ask around a bit. No better way to get a game going than that (for a rouge at least) One player actually turned it around on me & started "investing" in local establishments...... Not the normal way adventures get gold, but made the city feel more real -Great to run those games!-

I think a play off the "levels of comfort" concept could be that you could incur certain penalties if you are not living at a certain level in certain situations. Such as the impact of a Knight living at the poverty level possibly impacting his CHA task challenge ratings, or any character's hit point recovery increased or reduced commesurate with the level of comfort they were paying for.

If your an old 1E or 2E player and still have the DMG I believe they also had guidelines that would likely work for C&C.
