artwork.. original and "modified"

Post by Captain_K »

So I know I can always use my own hand drawings and sketches.. but where does modified art work become one's own. I think of the folks who take photos and doctor them and put affects to them and say they are now their own. I recall a famous Campbell's soup can image by Andy W or my Einstein T-shirt in odd inverted colors. Those are clearly something else that has been modified. Or Weird Al's tunes...

So that is my question, if I start with something off the internet and tweak the snot out of it.. is it still stealing? Not like I'm going to make any money off it, but the principal of it matters.

Thoughts?

That makes it pretty clear, unless its a parody derivative work is theft. So no can do.

Second question, is there any place on the web that has free "clip art" for the taking/use?

Not a lot of zombies.. I think I'm going to have to take my own pictures and go from there.

Depends on how you use it. "Fair use" is difficult to determine, even by the experts, but you can especially if being used for academic purposes.

Oh, and there are a lot of "public domain" sites. However, be careful. They're not all legit.

I've decided to pay two local artists, my own hand, and pictures of friends... you should see the results in 6-9 months... The Brothers and Sisters of Heavenly Virtue await the pen and blood.
