Class XP construction/deconstruction rules - still coming?

Post by Geron Raveneye »

Hi folks, it's been a while since I posted here (long enough to have to reactivate my password, actually  ), but here's the best place to post my question after all. :)

A few years ago, serleran had a class deconstruction document online, containing his breakdown of the XP costs for the separate classes. After a while, he took it down again, citing an NDA, because the topic might get published as part of the CKG or another book.

Now I finally snagged up the sweet colour-version of the CKG, and it seems the class construction isn't in there. Neither does it seem to be in any other book to date.

So I am wondering, will those rules still be published some when? Or could serleran be convinced to upload his document again?

The reasons I'm asking are:

- I want to build a C&C version of the BECMI D&D racial classes, with a few tweaks, for a beginner's group including (maybe) a young kid. To me, the old Basic Set was the, perfect introduction I terms of presentation, and C&C is the perfect entry point for rules complexity.

- I would LOVE to finally give my old Necromancer class a proper XP table. :D

So, does anybody have some information for me, pretty please?

And yes, I know C&C is perfectly playable out of the PHB, and I love it for that. Indulge my tinkering mind. ;)

Not sure if they are ever going to be published, but I should have a copy of them somewhere at home. I know Steve is doing racial classes in the upcoming Player's Guide to Airhde, so you might want to wait to see them. But I don't know how far off that book is. We are still waiting on the print version of the new Codex of Airhde (a few more weeks by Steve's account), but the PDF has been out to backers for several months now.

For the racial classes, why don't you just use the XP table from BECMI?

Basically because I'm a tinkerer (when the mood hits me), and I doubt that my idea of an "Elf" racial class for C&C would shake out like the old class, XP-wise. I'm planning to offer only Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, and Wizard at first, together with dwarves, elves, halflings and gnomes as racial classes. All races, except for halflings, would get their own set of mystical abilities cribbed from the druid, runemark and illusionist lists respectively, while also having combat capabilities. And since they get racial abilities on top of class abilities, I'd like to factor those in as well, to give the human classes a realistical fighting chance. :D

There is zero chance I will ever post my breakdown. I sometimes provide it through email when I have access to my old stuff (which is increasingly rare.)

That said, at some point the Trolls will release the Adventurer's Backpack. I hear its supposed to have this stuff... but, I am so out of the loop that what I hear is possibly whatever I make up.

Heh, yeah, I remember ( :o ) 8 years back, when I puzzled together my Necromancer, I was stoked to get that stuff from the back-then announced Castle Keeper's Guide (where I still expected it when I finally snagged it up  ). And though the whole "New Races" part is great, it's not what I had hoped for.

Which is why I'm trying to get a look at your deductions, serleran. :) You seemed to have it nailed down pretty well. 8-)

I'm betting his numbers are better than the Trolls. I've tried to deconstruct their numbers, I don't think there are any.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Apart from assuming an inherent bias towards the superiority of wizard magic vs. illusion is magic, I'd not know how to interpret the identical XP tables of both classes. Hard to deconstruct personal for or against something. :)
