Is it just me, or are their 2 sets of silvered weapon rules? 1 in the PHB which states silvered weapons inflict -1 dmg as they aren't as sound as iron or steel. Then, in the CKG the section on silvered weapons says it inflicts extra dmg versus undead and lycanthrops.

This is not a conflict. It does less damage in general, but against undead and lycanthropes, it does extra damage.

Plus, rules in the CKG are optional.

I don't think its a conflict, I just thought it was doubled or as you suggest the bonus vs certain baddies in lieu of the damage penalty

Is not a silvered weapon a complete weapon with a silver plating? How would that reduce damage? But anyway, its expensive and plating comes off so likely you'd save your silvered weapon for times of need. Now how about Maxwell's silver hammer? Solid silver hammer, how does that do less damage than an equally weight iron hammer?

It depends. In some instances I have read that silver weapons have to be completely silver, not just the plating, to be effective in their role. This of course does make the weapon less effective as silver is more brittle than iron/steel and does not retain the same edge. Though in the case of a hammer, it should actually do more since silver is heavier by weight than steel is...at the expense of durability. The hammer may suffer damage when hitting armored opponents or those of stone or such and be damaged easier on fumbles or when sustaining damage requiring a higher repair/upkeep cost or eventually shattering during combat.
Another thing to consider is that silver weapons are also the best lightening rods known to mankind due to silver's ridiculously high conductivity.

Others have allowed the plating though with a reduced effect against creatures affected by the silver and retained the normal combat stats of the weapon. (they still make fun lightening rods though)

Actually, I don't see anything in the PHB about silver weapons doing less damage. I looked through two different versions.

I have not in the C&C PHB either mm. But I have in other sources. The CKG, pg 242-243 has a section on silver weapons and it does not note any demerits on silver weapons either in terms of combat, though silver does not keep an edge as well as steel does in RL. (discussions with a swordsmith friend of mine decades ago.) Nothing in the M&T on demerits either.

I just assume its silver plating, and considerably thicker than the few millimeters we see done today. If I did weapon wear and tear rules, I'd worry about it getting re plated every few combats, but I don't, so I don't worry about it.

I'm sorry everyone, I got my D20 SRD silver weapon rules confused with my CnC silver weapon rules. The SRDs impose a -1 damage penalty and the CnC rule offer a +4 damage bonus versus lycanthrops.

Heh... you are not the only one. I did the exact same thing, and have found myself doing similarly on other details. Likely for the same reason i thought a sliver weapon had to be solid (or at least mostly) and not just a coating.
