What I find odd is that no one ever seems to bring up the point that at low levels, C&C characters are generally more powerful than 1st edition characters. Magic Users and Illusionists can cast more spells/day and Thieves Rogues have better chances of success picking locks and doing other roguish things (generally ~50% success for 1st level in C&C vs 10-20% in 1E). Unless a fighter has just awful stats, he'll have better saves at 1st level in C&C too.
Most games I either play in or CK are at the lower levels, so the high level save issues doesn't detract how much I enjoy the game. As others have mentioned, there are a lot of ways this could be "fixed" at higher levels, especially if someone wants to run a high level 1E module in C&C. How about giving the fighter some armor or an amulet that increases his saves?
