new melded classes

After reading Mike Stewart's articles in Crusaders 4 and 5, I got motivated to try my hand at melding some classes. This is what I came up with:

The Warden

Combination: Druid/Ranger

Class Primes: Wisdom and Strength

Hit Die: d8

Typical Races: Humans, Elves, Half-Elves

Armor Allowed: Padded, Hide, Leather

Weapons Allowed: As Druid

Alignments: Any neutral

Abilities: As a Druid and Ranger of equal level

Base to Hit: As Ranger

More militant than Druids and more spiritual than Rangers, Wardens patrol the wilderness with a fervor normally associated with Paladins.

Level HD BtH EPP

1 1d8 +0 0

2 2d8 +1 4,250

3 3d8 +2 8,750

4 4d8 +3 17,500

5 5d8 +4 35,000

6 6d8 +5 75,000

7 7d8 +6 145,000

8 8d8 +7 330,000

9 9d8 +8 525,000

10 10d8 +9 900,000

11 +3 +10 1,250,000

12 +3 +11 1,600,000

The Evangelist

Combination: Cleric/Bard

Class Primes: Wisdom and Charisma

Hit Die: d8

Typical Races: Humans and Half-Elves

Armor Allowed: As Bard

Weapons Allowed: As Cleric

Alignments: any

Abilities: As Cleric and Bard of equal level. Proselytize(Charisma)*

*Once a day, an Evangelist can use his proselytize ability to convert a person or group to the worship of the Evangelist's deity. An Intelligence save with a CL equal to the Evangelist's level will allow the target to see through the rhetoric.

Base to Hit: As Bard

While anyone can spread the word of their deity, the Evangelist can PREACH. Combining their Bardic skills with the knowledge of their deity, they can convert practically anyone to their faith.

Level HD BtH EPP

1 1d8 0 0

2 2d8 +1 3,750

3 3d8 +2 8.250

4 4d8 +3 16,502

5 5d8 +4 33,000

6 6d8 +5 65,000

7 7d8 +6 130,000

8 8d8 +7 260,000

9 9d8 +8 540,000

10 10d8 +9 875,000

11 +3 +10 1,275,000

12 +3 +11 1,700,000

The Spellsinger

Combination: Wizard/Bard

Class Primes: Intelligence and Charisma

Hit Die: d6

Typical Races: Humans, Elves, Half-Elves

Armor Allowed: As Bard

Weapons Allowed: As Bard

Alignments: Any

Abilities: As Wizard and Bard of equal level

Base to Hit: As Bard

A Bard whose studies lead him to the magical arts often becomes a Spellsinger. Elves have had a Spellsinger tradition stretching back millenia.

Level HD BtH EPP

1 1d6 0 0

2 2d6 +1 4,100

3 3d6 +2 7,450

4 4d6 +3 17,900

There you have'em. Don't be shy with providing feedback. Thanks for letting me put these out there.

The Preacher would not be allowed in my campaign world.

It's to powerful in a crudely antagonistic fashion.

Imagine you are a player of a character worshipping a Lawful-Good God/Goddess.

Here comes the Chaotic-Evil Preacher, who is the challenge for the session. This character is two to three levels higher than your character and starts preaching at YOUR character.

You fail your save.

Your character's control is ursurped by the CK and now worships this Chaotic-Evil gods of touching small children in inappropriate places while consuming the flesh of babies.

Conversion should never be immediate. At most, it should start as a charm effect, with several checks needed to actually bring the person into the fold. Alternatively with a check at insane odds (like -20, in addition to double HD, for example) an immediate conversion can take effect, but in no case should a PC be forced to change their belief structure from the result of a single die roll. Otherwise, I think the classes are alright, but have no real use for them myself.

I agree about the power of the Evangelist and would severely limit it potency vs. players, but think of the game where all the players friend, henchmen & followers turned (slowly) against him......

I like the Warden and Spellsinger, I can see either working into my campaigns. Not so much with the Evangelist, nothing really wrong I just don't see it IMC.

Is the Spellsinger allowed to cast spells while wearing armor? (I would vote yes, but just looking for your take on it, its your class. )

Small world.

I created a spell singer, too. Mine can do spontaneous casting (in light armor), has bard skills (except for decipher script), and gains spells at about half normal speed. Also, since the spell singer is singing/playing/chanting songs to create magic, his spells take spell level + 1 round to complete. Thus a fireball would take 4 rounds of singing to summon up.

I agree the Preaching ability is a bit too powerful as is written. It is in effect a Mass Charm spell. So I would definitely make them wait until 12th level or so before getting it as a class power.

Plus I would have them pretty much marked for death from any rival religion, evil, neutral, or good.

So only a PC with a PC party to support and protect them could ever have a real chance to reach a high enough level to use the Preach power.

Hopefully the Preacher's player is a really, really good roleplayer.

That would definitely help.

Plus I forgot to say the other two classes look workable to me. Only playtesting/using will tell me for sure.

The Spellsinger will be playing IMC tonight -- we'll see how it goes.

Yes, definitely share your opinion, so if I ever have a player who wants to try it I'll have a heads up to potential problem issues.

BTW, welcome to the Crusade.

Thanks for the feedback guys. In regards to the Evangelist, the Proselytize ability is really only meant to be used on NPCs. Trying to convert a PC would require some good roleplaying.

Maliki: The Spellsinger can cast in light armor (padded, leather, etc.) If he tries to cast in heavier armor he is in danger of having the spell "blow up" in his face. If (for example) he tries to cast in chainmail, he rolls a d20 and adds in his Int modifier and his level. If he rolls a natural 1, he takes the effect instead (really nasty with acid arrows )
