Ottawa Gaming
Hi all
Anyone gaming in Ottawa? If so I'd be interested to hear what you've got going, books used, style of play, group composition ect...
Anyone looking for another player?
Lastly I'm trying to fatten up my out of print collection. I've never purchased online/through the mail before. Any advice on this, pros, cons, locations, proceedures would be much appreciated. The more detailed the better.
Thanks

Hi Stoneshape!
I guess it depends which 'Ottawa' you're referring to.
I'm in Ottawa, Canada myself and I run a C&C game and I play in another group which also is running C&C. Both groups are currently full. But to answer some of your other questions...
In my campaign, I chose to use the current Erde setting developed by TLG and picked up all their d20 stuff related to it. I've also been keeping up with all the actual C&C material as well. I've used many modules from d20, C&C, as well as older 1st and 2nd ed AD&D up to now with ease. I make frequent reference to the older AD&D material and have my favorites among some of the d20 stuff. That being said, I only bring two books to the table being the current C&C core books.
As to rounding up your OOP collection, the best I would suggest is keeping a watch for certain things on eBay while imposing on yourself realistic limitations on how much you're willing to bid/pay for certain items. The other resource I've used on and off would be Noble Knight Games off the web. I love shopping there and have bought both new and used stuff there. You're probably going to find better prices with various auctions on eBay but checking both for comparison is probably handy.
Hope that helps!

Hey! That's great to hear that we've got another Crusader here in Ottawa (Canada) -- I'll certainly give you a heads up should things change. In my experience, these changes are sometimes faster than one might expect.
As for the manuscript... well... I'm still working on it. The best way to describe it right now would be 'in pieces' but in this case, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I'm working on different parts which will shape up (make up) the chapters of the book. It's still in pieces because I'm still trying to fine tune the arrangement of these sections and how I'm presenting the material. As such, I've been doing some revising and rewriting. I also haven't has much time as I would like to devote to the manuscript in the past few months but time is finally on my side. With some luck and certain determination, I hope to have it in some sort of finished state before the fall. That would be a good thing because I got a few ideas for another book while writing this one.
Who knows what will come of it... but thank you very much for asking!
Back on the topic of gaming... would you or have you thought about starting up a campaign of your own?

I would and have thought about starting up a campaign. At present I have one person willing to play, and one who might, though he'd most likely often be unavailible. Also neither have read the PH yet.
It's been a long time since I had a serious group running. Over the last two years I've been rebuilding my gaming collection. I heard about C&C, it sounded good to me, so I went down to FandomII and bought up what they had. Been back a few times since but it doesn't seem like they are keeping up with the new releases...say have you been beating me to that bottom shelf... I did manage to find the CK screen though, it looks great and there were three or four still left if your looking.
I'm going to try to order C&C goodness from FandomII sometime next month. So what's your take on FandomII?

Well, I'm sure that if you did decide to run one, you'd be able to find a few more players for it -- I'd even help send people your way! However, I'll be the first to admit that, it can be quite hard to get a dedicated group running.
As to Fandom II ... I would say it's very much a hit or miss depending what you're looking for. The good news is that they will carry the new releases. With the latest accessory (Miasmal Wyrms) having recently come out and finding its way to various stores and such, it wouldn't surprise me if they have it on their shelves right now. The bad news is that they either have a hard time restocking this stuff or forget to do it. Looking what I've bought from them produced by Troll Lord Games, I'd have to say that I've bought no more than a third from Fandom II. I got into the habit of getting some of my stuff online for me and my friends when I've seen how how hard it was to get some of the main books from the store. I had ordered my copy of the CK Screen when I assumed it wouldn't show up at Fandom anytime soon (which ironically, I saw on the shelves a couple days before I received my order).
The only thing I've seen on a (almost) regular basis have been the PHBs. When they do get them, I've seen these sell out very quickly. The M&T on the other hand seems to be a much rarer find. Suffice to say, that other people are buying the stuff... and that's a good thing. The more people who go in and ask about it (or inquire when they are getting more PHBs and M&Ts) the better! I have even thought about suggesting relocating the C&C product on that other wall, right next to the Hackmaster products which is right next to (and underneath) the WOTC D&D products. Might get a bit better exposure that way and increase C&C sales for them.
To be honest, I've never tried to specifically order anything from them. The closest I've come is saying that I was looking for 'x' and that you seem to be out. They made a note of it to (presumably) add it to the next order. Let me know how that goes.

Hi Moriarty
Went to Fandom yesterday, they have not gotten anything new in. I asked how C&C was doing and couldn't get a straight answer. So I asked if I could order 12 items of C&C and pay in 2 installments ie. they call, I go pay for and pick up 6 or 7, then as soon as possible return to pay for the remaining 5 or 6. Thus saving them ordering twice and me waiting twice. They wouldn't do it, even though I've ordered 3 times through them, multiply items, and showed up to pay within 2 days. Not to mention the numerous $$$ I've bought off their shelves. Needless to say I was not impressed! So I politely ordered 6 items and left.
I heard others complain about Fandom. A while back I googled them just for fun and there were complaints there also. A friend of mine plays Warhammer, he complained and now I know why. I guess in my case its just store policy, but all complaints I've heard and seen, each were of a different nature. Wonder how they stay afloat. Arrgh! Ok rant off...
Thanks for listening! Guess I'll have to learn how to order online. But my mind can't wrap arround not physically looking at a book first.
Say, feel like opening a real FLGS and muscle them out!?

Hey Stoneshape!
Sorry that you got the runaround but sadly, I'm not too surprised.
* WARNING * FANDOM II RANT AHEAD ...
As far as store policy is concerned... that's pure *BS* !! I've worked (and managed) in a small independent retail store before and it's really the little things like this, that one can do for a potential customer, that sets you apart from the bigger stores. This is also what keeps them coming back. The only reason the store is still afloat is because it's been around for so very long. It also needs to keep up with the times. One of the owners (the old) guy that was one of the original partners for the store can't seem to wrap around his mind that buying stuff online and from Amazon can actually be cheaper! He doesn't see the online threat at all. Probably no surprise that they have also never bothered to set up an online presence.
Shortly when the WOTC Magic Item Compendium came out, I popped in the store... leafed through it... and decided to pick it up. I put it down on the counter, and next to it, my trusty Mastercard! I was then promptly informed that they didn't take Credit Cards. They took cash, debit, and (to my surprise) checks. Despite the fact that they had it at a good price ($35 CDN is pretty good considering the $44 list pirce), I put it back on the shelf. I politely thanked them and went home and ordered a couple of copies (I knew a friend that wanted one) with that same trusted credit card. Total cost out of my pocket for one copy? Just shy of $30 CDN after taxes.
So... yeah... my impression of them is not the greatest, and it's probably only a matter of time before they collapse upon themselves.
END OF RANT
I know what you mean about wanting to look through a product before laying down the cash for it. Normally I'm the same way. The first exception to the rule came when I found out about C&C somewhere online. When I saw the costs of the books, I decided to risk it and ordered the PHB and M&T off of Amazon (which had it discounted as well). I think the pair ended up costing me between $30 and $35. I leafed through it... and loved it. When I popped in to Fandom a few days afterwards, I picked up the first Castle Zagyg book and a couple modules. Went back a month or so later and picked up the rest that I could find. I now have no qualms about ordering new stuff by TLG which I haven't seen yet based on what I've seen so far.
I still believe in supporting one's FLGS but at this point I'd rather go online for my RPG needs.
Funny you should mention opening up a *real* FLGS, I was just talking to my significant other about the subject the other night. Unfortunately, I don't have the capital for such a venture and I'd *REALLY* have to spit, polish, and shine a proposal (with appropriate market research... etc) before any Investor or Bank gave it a second look.
BTW ... what did you order this round?

Hi Moriarty,
Right away I knew it was BS!
As to staying afloat, I heard he bought the building, probablely with some other guy, then may be he pay back slowly or something. Sounds unlikely but being there so long, a good oppertunaty may have arisen. Don't hold me to this.
I remember him from when I was a youngen, grabbing up AD&D goodness!
Have you ever tried to have a conversation with him!?
Couple months ago I inquired about the Black Company novels. Must of taken him by surprise... Well if he didn't lay into me like some RPG DRILL SERGENT... Who rights that? Authers name copyright dates names and more names dates and liniages on and on rapid fire... Well I answered them with fine precision and acumen! He then kinda slumped back looking both exhausted and invigourated!! Luckily my girl (bless her heart) steps in at this point diverting him to her question, and well if he didn't saddle up all sweetness and butter, happy to answer full and polite, pulled from thin air!

While waiting "for more in a sec" I feel compelled to add in my LGS experiences.
I find way too many stores who aren't willing to do that little "extra".
Even the best store I have ever been in, the Green Dragon in Chas. SC, who are great at special orders and such.
In my case I buy way too much RPG stuff over the course fo a year. I often approach a $1,000 or more (US) every year. Like this year I have already spent over $300.00 and likely to double that in the next month or two (Fathers Day and B-day coming up).
So I cannot ignore how much I save buying on line. So with a desire to support my LGS I went up and told them how much I spent every year and how much I save on line based on that.
I am also aware of their normal percentage for gaming merchandise as well as comics. So I ask if they will give me a 20% discount on anything I pre order so I can give them my business instead of just buying on line.
Every single store has said no. So instead of getting an average 14% profit from me off of books they rather get zero.
I still buy stuff from my LGS's, but only if it is under $20.00, like the TLG mods. Goodman DCC's, etc...
I buy everything else on line. Even TLG stuff because my current LGS doesn't stock it and requires me to special order. Since he's making me special order I just order straight from the Trolls and give all my money to them.
Its in my best interest to keep TLG going, not my LGS.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Mori,
Sorry for that, apperently if I don't submit a post shortly after I start typing, it won't go through... And I type Very Slow...
We never did order our books that day, we excused ourselves as quickly as possible, barely making the door before we burst out laughing!!!
I don't dislike the guy, except his store policy and things in that vein. I bet he's a good guy, just oddly socailized, maybe anxious ect...
Back to online ordering. Don't laugh too hard but I don't even have a credit card (for no other reason than I don't want one) Just a simple kinda guy, mostly.
As to a Real FLGS, I'm game! aint got nones ejumekashon ons papor tho... But quick to learn, very good memory, patience of a saint (many have said this) and other skills.
Your right about the proposal, it needs be Buffed, knowing a Priest would also help. Location is huge as is knowing your audience. Having fun and creative ways to indroduce product is also big.
My girl and I talk of such things. She's not a Gamer, but loves books, and probablely knows more of myths and such than most do.
I'm pretty sure she'll be C&Cing soon.
I ordered up After Winters Dark, The Deeper Darkness, Assault on Blacktooth Ridge, Slag Heap, Fingers of the Forsaken Hand, and Secret of Smugglers Cove.
Catch ya latter

Hi Treebore,
Thanks for jumping in!
I guess the Subject Heading is pretty exclusive sounding. I was just wanting to see what C&C was going on in Ottawa Canada, and learn online ordering. I know there's not much to it, I'm wondering about arrival condition, one mans' good condition vs anothers', sizable orders to an apartment, if your not there wheres your stuff go, to the post office? or left at your door ect... Who to order from, crossing countries, and what's fair shipping.
Maybe I should start another thread, Your Gaming Store; FLGS or LGS; Rave and Rant!
I hear ya, in my oppinion it's barely a little extra to a known customer. No wonder the hobby suffers. No wonder many people and things suffer, but I'm not going to get into all that just yet.

I seem to remember being told Canada has not adapted the ATM/Debit card that is also useable as a credit card that draws directly off of your bank account.
Is that correct? If so, another possibility is seeing if and how PayPal works for Canadians. It can also be set up to draw directly from your bank account.
If you budget well you can transfer money from your bank account to your PayPal account yourself and then use it to pay. Total control.
If you can get an ATM/Debit/credit card then I suggest you break down and get it. It takes extra discipline to keep track of payments and withdrawals with the card, but it can be done.
Is that correct? If so, another possibility is seeing if and how PayPal works for Canadians. It can also be set up to draw directly from your bank account.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Well, if you're weird stoneshape, I am too. I don't have a credit card, either, though every bank it seems gives a debit card when you get an account, so in a way I do, but it can't charge more than I have in my account. I never use online purchasing, as I prefer to have the object in hand (my fiance buys stuff online a lot, and she'll get me stuff that way, but I prefer in-store.) Otherwise, I don't know how it works in Canada, but usually if something is to be delivered (some places just leave it, which is poor business...) and you're not there to get it, they leave a drop note meaning you're informed they have something for you, and you have to go to them to pick it up. I do know that going over the border, either way, via delivery is a long process.

It took a while for me to get back to this thread... but now that I'm back:
Re: Debit / Credit / Paypal
Yep, our debit cards are only debit cards. They can't be used as a Credit Card. However, a few banks do pre-paid credit cards I believe. The good news is that you can still setup a Paypal account (to withdraw from you Bank account) which will permit one to do some online ordering to Noble Knight Games (for example). As for the credit card thing in general -- they can be a blessing and a curse... I say that if you can do without one, then more power to you! Seriously...
Re: Canada Post & The Mail
Typically, Canada Post will not leave parcels if you're not home and will leave a notification card which says where and after which time you can pick it up. I found this to be more true with where you live (apartment vs house). I've had little problems with our postal system. Arrival condition has always been very good but that is also dependent on how well it's packaged. One of the reasons I love Noble Knight Games is also because of how well they package their stuff. As for prices... that's a bit trickier. If you pay more, you wait less and the larger or heavier the package, the more you'll pay. The United States Postal Service has recently raised their prices. But to give you a vague idea, a box set... like the various TSR box sets (D&D Basic, Expert, ect) would cost around $12.00 USD or so via International Airmail (6-10 days on average). I hate to sound like a broken record but the prices at Noble Knight Games don't overcharge when it comes to shipping.
This is probably why 75% of my online gaming purchases have been done through them!
Re: A New Hope... er... new FLGS
Well Stoneshape, someone once told me to not just dream but dream big dreams. Opening up some sort of store is something I've been meaning to do for years. Now that I think about it, it's now been ten years. The ultimate form of this store isn't fixed but I love books and related media and when (and not if) I manage to get one up and running... books of some sort will be sold!
A gaming store would fit those requirements quite well I think. Since I find myself in between jobs at the moment... I find myself dreaming a lot more! Dreaming when I probably should be working harder still on that manuscript...
I'll certainly give you more developments as things continue to happen, and I do decide to get that new FLGS up and running in the near future, you'll be among the first to know. I think I'd need all the help I can get for such a venture!

Re: Ottawa Gaming
Hi - I noted this thread was done many years ago but I am wondering if there are some Ottawa area gaming groups looking for an extra gamer!
