Vampire's Turn Resistance

Post by The 8th Samurai »

The ability of Turn Resistance is stated on the stat block of the vampire. However, I cannot find where it describes what this ability is. What is Turn Resistance?

Happy gaming

Errata. It should not be there.

Yep, a 3E ism that slipped over from the SRD.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I kept the turn resistance for powerful undead, I thought it was a good idea. Mainly I just like to see the look on the players face when the vampire reisted the clerics turning.

Well, its not quite a holdover from the SRD (the vampire conversion was not a cut and paste, seeing as how its a template in d20...), but rather, another in a series of miscommunication due to my lack of not having the PHB (or box set) when M&T was being developed, and my not deciding which version (of three) I liked for TR. So, in the end, it was best to just drop it, because there was never any agreed function for it.

Maybe I should re-start my old Q&A thread...

At first I thought maybe you change the Wisdom CB for turning undead to 18, instead of 12, for turn resistance. I then looked in the description (and everywhere else for it) and couldn't find it. So if I didn't receive an official answer here I was just going to raise the turning CB from 12 to 18. Maybe I still will . . . not sure yet.

That was one of the ways it would have worked. Another involved being somewhat like SR, in that, before a turn could even be done you had to roll over a X on a d20, unmodified (this was too complicated because it meant having to roll twice). The last, effectively gave the undead a save against the turning, which was again, too complex because it meant two rolls, and would be seen as "opposed" which don't actually exist in C&C, by the book. A couple other ideas floated about were just giving the undead HD boosts for turning only which is almost the same as treating the turn as non-Prime, but that was tossed. In the end, turn resistance was just dropped, but if you want to use it... there are many ways of using it. It'll be a houserule, though. ;)

Why not just have Turn Resistance increase the creatures HD with respect to turning? Maybe a +4 bonus? So to turn a 8HD vampire you'd have to be able to turn a 12HD creature!

This does not add any extra dice rolls for anybody involved.

I usually just allow intelligent critters to make a contested roll using their WIS against the Cleric.
