What's your favorite monster to use in a campaign?

Something that gives the game a real twist, or is just plain fun to GM or play against...

The most dangerous animal of all, of course ... MAN!

The dreaded and most evil " a rabid Flumph"
Who on earth thought of that creature anyways? Okay so you are trudging through the swamp when all of a sudden a flumph appears and attacks The only thing the players will do is laugh at the DM. Right so the flumph misses when it tries to land on your head and falls to the ground and lies there. Players: So whats it doing now? DM: nothing it just lies there. Anyways you get the point.

Sadly, any character in the hands of my significant other thus far. No matter what my intentions are as a CK, the way she plays the character bumps the 'rating' of my game up several notches.

She is currently playing a near psychotic nymphomaniac of a ranger who has made many 'forceful' advances to friend and foe... PC and NPC alike. Her character truly has no shame.

I guess ... as long as everyone is having a good time ... and that there are no minors at in the gaming vicinity, we're fine!

Mine would be the Illithids.

I had a single Mind Flayer in my campaign of years ago that was way too strong for the characters to beat. I would have him show up like a tornado and wreak political havoc on the area at-large. He never killed anything but would turn the PC's happy little world inside out. He would manipulate everyone and everything. Any time I mentioned his name the players would all let out a collective sigh.

His queue was pretty much any time a player would say "Well that went well".

Orcs.

I like using orcs.

Not the generic fodder kind, but orcs with personality, goals and big friggin swords.

The one and only time I used a Flumph, it was a hoot. It was supposed to be a recurring NPC, but the campaign tanked before it came around again.

As far as what beasties make me very happy to use, it's gotta be dragons. I love the epic battle of heroes against dragons. It's what the game is all about.

But other than that, I love evil magic-users as villains. Whether they're living or Lich, I love the variety of terrible things they can do. And much like the dragon, it's a pretty archetypal villain.

Zombies! No player can be certain of what 3rd-party variation thereof they are facing - and what gnarly zombie-esque powers it may have.

"There's too many of them!! Run!!"

No one wants to make that constitution save...

I've been thinking about this topic all day. I just can't narrow it down. I love Orcs because they are monsters, but yet so close to humans... gnolls too. Dragons, devious powerful and completely cunning. True villians to marvel at they are.

Stirge and skeletons... way cool too!

I just don't know.

You obviously have not ran into the Flumphs in Rappan Athuk: Reloaded.

I don't have one.

I have many.
Death Knights

Slaadi

Vampires

Liches

Gnolls

Duegar

Illithids

Were Rats

Giants

Dragons

Wyvern

Bullette

Demons

Devils

Elementals of all types

Genies etc...

Kobolds

Skeletal Warriors

Then there are a bunch I simply like.

Lots. Its part of why I like DMing, I get to play them all.

Actually, I retract my earlier "anything." The thing has to be monstrous. Not some stupid "I'm your friend" creature. I hate those. If they are lawful good, or good in any way, I hate them. Those aren't "monsters." Those are boring moral plays. Sure, I might create a few here and there, just to be annoying, but I still hate things that aren't really monsters.

I've hit players with just about everything, but I always love siccing a mean old troll on 'em. Had a ball hitting them with a family of hill trolls as they scouted out approaches to Rappan Athuk. Doesn't matter what level they are, they always fill their diapers when a frothing troll tears into the group!

Flying bear, with a horn on its head shooting laser beams from its eyes.

Short of that, a One-Eyeed, One-Horned, Flying purple people eater.

Meepo.

Oh, and vampiric black pudding assassins.

Oh, and, yeah, umm, anything with 10 or more templates.

a troll is a nasty one......

I love any monster used with intelligence. what is better than a group walking into a clearing to womp up on a few orcs, when a shower of arrows and an oger comes crashing out of the tree line on their flank. ..... Boy that ranger NPC we were rude to would have been a big help .....

I just played a session of that game this weekend where the BBEG dragon had 5 "templates" on him... no joke. Oh yeah, and that battle only took 4 hours to fight one guy... ugh.

Skathos ran us through a load of monsters last year in our C&C chat game. The ettin, carrion crawler and giant spider come to mind. They were very fun to battle and our group actually killed them all (not at same time, heh).

For my table top group, I've enjoyed using worgs, giant weasels, giant centipedes and owlbears.

I love to use the PC's evil relatives of family enemies. Nothing cooler than a blood fued battle, screaming obsenities, "That Mutha #@$%^& di what? I'll kill tha sunna&!#$%" or a once loved one out to murder ya.

Of cource, a psychotic beholder who worships a Cthulhu type god and likes to have prisoners watch as he eats their children alive and turns the few reamins into beholder spawn was kind of fun. Friend asked me to see someone for my problems during that description.

Well not till much later. Crazy girlfriend breaking into my apartment, holding a knife over me, hand cuffing herself to my shower on Christmas, hiring guys to break my knees; yeah I had to see someone. . .

Damn, crazy ex. . . not that's a %&$^ing scary monster!

Pre 3.0, I always wanted to run a Gyth invasion, but it never came to be.

After the SRD, I've tooled around with Aboleth masterminds and minion races. Little did I know that Bad Axe Games did the work for me.

Gotta keep these threads alive!

My fav baddie would have to be Beholder. I remember playing a few games many years ago and was awe struck on the power each Beholder has.

In terms of ck/dming my fav monster to use has always been a doppleganger. I think having one disguised in a party always makes for good fun. The last was a surly lass named Surly!

Wow. Only one? If I had to pick only one, I'd pick the Ogre. Awesome PITA for the low level party.

If I could pick a few more, I'd say Skeleton Warriors (which are a very close second - my jaw dropped to the floor the first time I saw them in the FF), and probably Orcs would be third.

Kobolds, and lots of 'em.

In my campaign world, they breed like rabbits, eat like locusts, and attack in hordes. They destroyed one region so completely it took 50 years for any sense of normalcy to return.

If I have to pick just one, I'll ask you to flip a coin. Heads: Hobgoblins. Tails: Constructs. If it lands on the edge: Non-vampire, non-zombie undead.
