Oooo... glossy...

So, i just found the 3rd printing of the PH in a local game store. The pages are glossy. Very nice.
This raises the question- will the 2nd printing of M&T have glossy pages? What about the CKG? What about all future releases?
I didn't think i'd get the 3rd printing, but these glossy pages are making me rethink that. Damn you Trolls!

We gamers can have such pathetic weaknesses.

For those who have the 3rd printing: how well do the glossy pages take pencil? I'd hate for someone to mess up a pristine book, but if you're the type that makes notes, let me know! I've been thinking of updating, but I'm a book scribbler... not as bad as this guy, though:

The glossy pages dont take pencil well at all.

They don't like Sharpies, either, from what I've heard. Need to get a third print myself... blast it.

Hmm. I prefer non-glossy. I still may pick up a 3rd printing, though -- extra PHs around the table are always nice.

I liked what I saw on the glossy page version of the PH, but didn't have a chance to compare it with my 1st and 2nd edition. It did seem very nice, so I'm sure to pick up a copy.

I can't stand glossy pages.
How durable are they? Glossy pages in other products always seem very prone to ripping.
Hmph.

I havent ripped any glossy pages from my leatherette or my 3rd print PHBs, and my leatherette has been kicked around quite a bit.

Are the new editions in color?

Not "edition", but "printing". And no, no color.
No one has answered my question though- will all future books be in glossy pages too?

Err, thanks. I guess.

Didn't we recently hear that the price of the PH was going up because of paper cost? I wonder if it was in part because of a glossy "upgrade" of the paper as well.
I have several glossy RPG rulebooks and pretty much hate them all. They end up as coffee-table books. Give me rough pages that I can touch any day....

The PHB & M&T prices are staying at the $19.95 mark for the current printings. I'm going to assume that M&T, 2nd printing will have glossy paper too. Stevey C did say that increased price was probably for future prints, but did not say it was due to different paper type but profit margins.
I have no problems with ripping or otherwise on the glossy versions we play with. It's all good.

I'm surprised most people seem to be against the glossy paper. I think the glossy makes it looks more professional, polished somehow.
Maybe someone should do a poll... heh.

I wouldnt say "most" people are against the glossy paper, but I understand why some would be. I can tell you that the possible price increase has nothing to do with the paper "upgrade" at all, but the diminishing profit margin due to shipping costs and rising costs across the board for supplies used to create the books.

No point - they're either printed or on the way to the printer. I don't imagine there's much difference in cost between coated paper and uncoated anyway.
Even if it doesn't take pencil, well I'll find a way... I've found that hittting the spot you want to write on with an eraser first makes it easier to write on some coated papers. If that fails, there's always white-out...

The only way glossy will bother me is if my highlighters don't work on them.
As for tearing, I haven't had that problem with glossy books, but I am extra careful with my books then the vast majority of people I have gamed with over the years.
Of course I can't think of any RPG books that I have in glossy. Only certain books heavy with photos and art are glossy. Of what I remember owning, anyways.
The new Glorantha stuff might be glossy. I'll have to go double check.

I heard the glossy paper was actually a snafu. It wasn't supposed to be there at all.

I'm another who dislikes glossy paper. I'll probably still pick up a 3rd printing just because though.
The glossy paper is a big negative in my opinion though.

Really? Heard from who? That might be an indicator of what to expect for future releases.

If thats the case I am surprised the Trolls or Breakdaddy haven't posted this.

Don't hear that it was a snafu either, at least on these boards. Because the Leatherette edition turned out so well, I would assume that the glossy paper was a TLG decision. I think the glossy makes the book look nice, but doesn't help those of us who like to highlight at all.

I may have heard it wrong but it was from a certain art guy at White Hart ren faire. He can correct me if I did hear wrong since it was ungodly hot and my brain was melting.

The 2nd printing of the M&T will, to match the PHB, which was put on the wrong paper due to printer error. As for anything else, I don't honestly know.
Whether further printings go that route, I am also unsure. A smoother finished paper, much like laser paper, is something I think would work well. Its thicker, durable, and one can write on it and it still looks more professional

Hmmm... so in that case, when can we expect the 4th printing of the PH and the 3rd printing of M&T?

When the others two sell out.
If you want to see them sell out faster, rally people to go out and buy them faster. Which means organizing in store demo's, going to conventions and organizing game demo's, and recruiting new players. ^_~`

Yeah the glossy paper was indeed a printer error as Pete stated. Sorry I didnt clarify this earlier, but it's nice and cleared up now. I do like it personally, but I completely understand why others do not.

I agree and love the glossy pages.
For markups/pencil notes, I also bought the PDF which I printed to use for such cases.
