2nd Printing vs 3rd Printing PHB?

Post by Mana Trance »

What are the differences, besides the glossy pages? Should I get the new one, or the leatherette "old" one?

I think the only major difference is the poison table. I know the Trolls cleaned up some errata also. Other than that, I don't know.

That about sums it up really (from my understanding)... it's more to do with the Poison Charts than anything else. If you're considering the Leatherette edition, a lot of the errata from the 2nd printing will have been corrected...

They both have the glossy pages and since the price is the same due to the special the Trolls are having, it's really a matter of preference.

If you decide to go with the Leatherette edition, you'll probably want the M&T book to match and that will include the revised poison charts. Either set, and you're... well... set!

Well, if you want to get the 'leatherette' its $55 normally vs the $20 3rd printing. The pages are glossy in both.

The 2nd printing is sold out. So unless you want the leatherette as a 'collectors' item which its intended to be, I recommend the $20 3rd printing. Unless your just really into spending a lot of money, and we're good with that too.

There are also some additional editing errors, typos and the linke that were corrected from the 2nd printing to the 3rd. Some of the spells in conjunction with their lists have beenb tightened up with respect to being reversible and I think a few spell components. This is nothing that effects gameplay, but worth mentioning.

I think eventually, Although you can find the same information in the new M&T printing and the Dragons of Aihrde book.

Would it be possible for the Trolls to release a 3rd Print Errata for those with previous editions? At least a list of what has changed for Poisons and Spells (as I consider this a big deal). It would also help (a lot) with people that have different prints and are in the same gaming group (my book says this, my books says this syndrom - I know, go with the newest book, but it will still save headaches if we have a small errata doc detailing some of these changes).

thanx

Honestly, I think the poison rules are the only things that have been changed. An errata document would only have to worry about that. The other changes, were so minor as not to affect gameplay, almost in any way.

Well, the 2nd printing errata is already posted. See the link in Travelers sig line. That, and the new poison chart, which can be found in that Dragons of Airhde book is pretty much it.

But they are only 1st. or 2nd. printing. I'd rather pay $20 and get a 3rd. printing so all the errata and poison info would be in it.

Still a cool move by the Trolls though.

I'm pretty sure Steve posted that "some of the 3rd printing errata" is in the Leatherette print run. I would guess that the new poison rules wasn't one of them, though.

Don't know about the M&T.

The "Now available for pre-order" makes me hopeful the M&T leatherette is the second printing.

With how little atttention I have paid to the leatherettes it could have said that for the last year.

At $20.00 I am guessing the Trolls are selling these pretty much "at cost", with little or no profit.

I asked that question when the sale started. Steve said that the M&T Leatherette is the 2nd printing.

I've been wondering why they felt the need to change the assassin's poison chart. I've looked at both, and i think i prefer the 2nd printing version.

What was the reason behind the change?

There was a feeling among the Trolls that the prices for the poisons was too high.

Hmmm... that's not the major change though. Instead of actual poison names, you've got Type I, Type II, etc. It's much less interesting than the specifically named poisons, imo.

It gives an excuse for people who are interested in such things to do research and reading and educate themselves on such subjects, should such detail be required in the game.

There are tons of sources for this kind of material. The hardest part is deciding upon game mechanics. IE damage.

Most poisons result in death in real life, its just a question of how the poison gets you dead.

Well, by that logic they should get rid of longswords and crossbows and plate mail and replace them with Type 1 melee weapon, Type 3 ranged weapon, and Type 4 armor.

That works for me too. I'll pass that idea along to Steve.

Pete, if you do that I will beat you with a Type III blunt weapon, wooden (1d8 (melee only), 8-10 lbs.).

Or your next weapon description could look like this:
Type III Edged Weapon: HKA 1d6 (1 1/2d6 with STR), Ranged (can be thrown; +1/2), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (30 Active Points); OAF (-1), Range Based On STR (-1/4), STR Minimum 7 (-1/2), Real Weapon (-1/4). Total cost: 10 points.

I am resisting the urge to say those rules would take away my imagination.

Whew!

I resisted!
