Heroic Achievement Bonuses instead of feats

Post by seskis281 »

I had an idea that sprang to mind concerning a different approach to some of the abilities linked to feats in d20 systems and using it in my homerules:

Heroic achievement bonuses. At the discretion of the CK after completion of a major segment of the campaign (not tied to levels - and the CK should plan carefully only 2 or 3 of these), the character's success in their class warrents an heroic achievement bonus, one specifically tied to what they have done....

for example, the fighter who has shown fighting prowess that has helped the party succeed to this point might be awarded "sword-master" heroic achievement, which could varryingly give him a + to hit and damage, or, an additional attack. Magic users might gain extra spells, or even a "always available" 1st level spell to use at will with no limit. (Just initial random thoughts here - nothing coalesced yet)

Does anyone else use something similar?

What sort of "Heroic Achievement Bonuses" might anyone suggest for differing classes? Should there be differences based on race as well?

All thoughts welcome!

I think I essentially do the same thing when I award a feat, which simply means they no longer have to do a SIEGE check to set up the Cleave, Power Attack, Energy substitution, and the like.

It becomes a ability unique to their character based on "maneuvers" they use a lot.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I allow a character to expend XP on such things, after they have gotten to the point that it makes sense. But, I also award two XP totals... one for this kind of thing, and the other for level, so you can't be level 1 and have 587349506437856934565863478564378657834675 "feats."

In this case I would rather award "action points" or "fate points". Then, make a list as to what these points could be used for. Of course, once used, the action/fate point disappears and you must earn a new one through another heroic/worthy action.
