Zero Level Characters

Post by Coleston the Cavalier »

Heres my attempt at C&C Zero-level PCs.

Please note, all crunchiness comes from a Serleran post back in April http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... llordgames

Each character selects one attribute that will be considered a "half prime," on which all tied saves/checks are treated as a base of 15, rather than 12 or 18 (its an effective +3 bonus); humans may have two of these.

In addition, each character starts with their Con / 3 for HP, and no Con modifier to the result.

In order to become full-fledged PCs (ie, to become 1st level) the character must have a mentor and be trained in their character class occupation and earn 750 XP.

When 1st level is achieved, the Player Character rolls normally (adding Con modifier) and compares the result to the zero-level HP total. If the 1st level result is lower, HP increase by +1; otherwise, the HP total becomes the 1st level total. Example, a wizard apprentice with a 12 Con has 4 HP at zero-level; after advancing to 1st level, the result of the d4 is 2 -- the 1st level wizard has 5 HP. Example 2: a fighter-in-training with an 18 Con starts with 6 HP, but rolls a 10 on the d10 at 1st level advancement, resulting in 13 HP.

Cool, now I can try the 0 level mods I got from Goodman.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Interesting. I'd like to see it played out to see if it works or not. Like the original post said, it was just an idea that came... no real forethought put in, so there's likely to be some kind of hole in the "logic."

I assume you'd give zero-level fighters a BtH of +0.

Wouldn't those BtH be lower than standard humans out of M&T?

True, they are lower. However, these 0-Level humans are focusing on studying magic, theology, moving silently, etc.

And they get a few perks that the standard human doesn't get (like 0-level spells and "half-prime" abilities).

That's why I think the adjusted bth's are fair - giving the PC something to look foward to whent they get to 1st level.

But nobody has to do it this way. This is just my tinkering.
