Two Magic Items
The PCs are currently on a quest to find the final resting place of St. Helgara, a long-dead paladin. I've been working on some unique magic items to place on her corpse and have come up with the following:
Coalraker
- A Battleaxe +1 with a mottled blade that appears to have been held over a flame until its steel darkened. When wielded in battle, it glows red with heat, like the coals of a forge. It adds 1d4 to damage and provides a +1 save vs. cold
St. Helgara's Holy Symbol
- this holy symbol is made of electrum, representing the clear winter light. It provides a +2 bonus to turning attempts, and additionally warns the user of danger when the wearer rests (acts as an alarm spell while wearer is sleeping).
Any thoughts? Too powerful for a 5th-ish level party? Too weak?

Seems fine to me.
These should probably "grow" with the power of the party so as to not become useless "Legendary" artifacts. They are seeking them out, because they are badass tools, right?
As the PCs legend grows, these items should grow to. Don't give them a reason to just lay these babies by the wayside, simply because some nameless/storyless +3 Holy Battleaxe shows up later in the campaign.
Give these things extra value that "unlocks" over time. (Maybe based upon level)

I wonder about your choice over protection from cold though? A fire based weapon I could see protecting against fire. But, going by fantasy elemental opposition, I don't really see an ice based defense?
That being said, Id put a higher bonus on the protection in any event. Something akin to protection from elements. ^_^

I dunno... there is a logic to it... it keeps you warm!

I like them, and see nothing wrong with their bonuses. They are, after all, magic and can do whatever they were intended to do... bonus or not, ability or not.
Does that axe inflict fire damage? Only important against specific things which may be immune or subject to it, like a troll, ice paramental, or fire elemental.

I don't think that either items are too weak or strong for a 5th level party. Nice little story story too. Might have to snag a few elements of your thoughts there too...
Nice stuff.

Re: Two Magic Items
Power level is okay, as long as the PCs don't become Christmas trees...
IMO, there should be consistency with this one. I suggest that as an anti-undead item, it gets +2 to Turn Undead attempts, +2 bonus to saving throws against undead attacks (ghoul touch, etc.), and Alarm effect functions only with regard to undead in the vicinity whether the user is resting or not.

Go for it! If you must know, this all started with a roll on one of the tables from the Mother of All Treasure Tables.
The final resting place is said to be on the Mountain of Steel, but they don't know where that is. They do know that the last place St. Helgara was seen alive was Bard's Gate.
This could change, but right now, I lean toward some kind of giant waiting for them atop the Mountain of Steel (inspired by the cover of the old Wilderness Survival Guide).
And thanks for all the suggestions and ideas, folks!

Mother of All Treasure Tables is a nice little book too. I have two copies of it lying around here.
Yeah, but that is for only monetary treasures, nothing magical. I like it too. Just reading through those treasures gives me adventure ideas.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I like them, as they are. They are unique magic items and that makes them feel even more magical (over a standard +1 axe or something). As for power level, that would depend on your campaign, if everyone else has a +3 this or that, then they are a little week, but if a +1 weapon is a real find, then these items are powerful enough to be legendary.
