Paladins/Rangers using cleric/druid items

Post by Treebore »

I like not having Paladins and Rangers casting spells, but what about allowing them to use items such as wands and staves?

Anyone do it this way?

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Nope.

Although, I may add back Paladin spells, at which point ... naw, probably still a big no on the wands/staves.

I wouldn't be prone to allowing it either. Even if I did, I *might* go that way with the Paladin, but definitely not the ranger. I much prefer the C&C, no spells ranger who is more of a wilderness warrior and less of a sword swinging druid. Allowing him to use druidical items would push him back towards the camp of a sword swinging druid to me.

Ditto. I never liked how the Ranger got spells, though the Paladin is OK that way.

Want a sword swinging druid? Easy:

Fighter/Druid

Yeah, but isn't a spell casting paladin just a sword swinging cleric.

As to Tree's original question, I don't see where it would break the game. Heck, you could even make the paladin/ranger roll a Wis check or something to activate the magic in the staff/wand.

Not sure how many staves exist for a cleric or druid that isn't a weapon. Ranger and paladin can use those... but not the spellcasting unless the thing says they can.

Wands and rods: not a single wand exists in my games for divine magic (the gods do not allow their power to be trapped thusly.)

Other divinely-empowered items: depends on what it does, but in general... if its protective: yes; if its offensive: no; if its healing: up to 3rd level spells - yes, otherwise - no; if its miscellaneous: depends on per ability

BtB: wands and items that cast spells: no.

Staves: as a weapon: yes.

Thats actually one option I was considering.

Plus Paladins ""technically" are Spellcasters, since they do Lay on Hands, Cure Disease, and the 12th level Spell, so allowing them to use items isn't a big stretch.

Yeah, but I'm cool with that. A Paladin should be associated with religion and clerics and church and such. He's a more martially oriented religious figure.

But, when I play a ranger I don't want to be a martially oriented tree hugger. I wanna be a wilderness scout type. Not an eco warrior.

Cool enough, DD.
