House rules on non-primes?

Post by seskis281 »

Answering another thread I was thinking about the question of non-primes not getting level bonuses.

Does anyone else house-rule this differently?

I am toying with a house-rule in my new campaign that says every non-primes do get level bonuses, but at 1/3 rate of primes. I.E. +1 at 3rd, +2 at six, etc.

It's my one "not so sure about" issue with the seige, that a 10th level character would still roll like a 1st on a non-prime attribute check, barring CK circumstance bonuses.

BtB, non-primes get level bonuses as long as it falls within the purview of that character.

Just like a prime score might not necessarily get a level bonus, again depending on the character's purviews.

Or are you tlaking about something other than adding level to a roll?

What DD said.

Or put another way, Prime and Non-Prime are independent of bonuses applied. That is, whether a SIEGE roll is based on a Prime or Non-prime don't affect what bonuses get applied, it just affects the base target number (12 or 18). After determining the base target number, you then add whatever modifiers/bonuses are applicable based on ability scores, level, circumstantial modifiers, etc..

Ok - I just cleared this up in my head... any attribute check I deem within the class-based purview of the character gets level check, prime or not, I give level bonus to, something completely out of class base (barbarian trying to pick lock) I do not, even if dex is prime.

Ok I know that seemed silly and simple, but it was one little bit of misread on the rules for me... in my brain I was still seeing level bonuses as going to primes period, as if class primes were defining signifiers for checks.

That pretty much clears that up DD... thanks!

I may still add a secondary, +1 for every 5th level for "non-purview" moves or actions, just to spice things up and say even the 15th level Barbarian may have picked up a little lock-picking from watch his friend the Rogue...

I've actually seen that same misunderstanding crop up a number of times with folks since I started playing.

Glad I could help.

YEp. I also helped oout the PC's by allowing their level bonus to be added for all the skills on the 3E skills list to have their level added, plus what falls in the purview of the character.

Plus, in play, they can dedicate time and effort to learn other skills. Which allows them to then add their level to all checks for it.

So eventually, everyone can be good at spotting ambushes, hearing through the door, etc... if the players decide they want to be.
