Cleric XP chart
My C&C campaign had its third session last night. I've been handling experience on a pretty straightforward basis: monsters as written, plus GP value of treasure, plus 50 XP per hour per level as a story award, with occasional bonuses for good playing, so it looks like most of the PCs will be within levelling range after about two or three more games. But we were looking through the PHB, and noticed that the Cleric in C&C has a much steeper XP chart than the cleric in any previous edition of AD&D. My 2nd edition AD&D PHB lists the cleric hitting 2nd level at 1,500 XP, while C&C has it at 2,251 -- a 50% increase. This doesn't "feel" right to me -- should the cleric actually level slower than the druid and fighter? Or was the AD&D cleric advancing in level too quickly, and is the C&C cleric a better fit?
I wouldn't worry about it.
C&C Clerics have more spells to begin with than their AD&D counterparts.
I am playing a cleric in one campaign and have one being played in the campaign I am running. Both are effective and capable in the styles they are being played in.

I never did pay too much attention to the 2nd Edition Cleric's advancement but now that it's been called to my attention, the progression sounds a bit quick for me.
I find that the C&C Cleric a good fit over all
The AD&D 2E Cleric did advance a bit quickly IMO and I feel that the C&C Cleric to be a bit of a better fit.
The Cleric is one of the few classes that can wear any armor and is tougher than most classes. Even though they don't benefit from the same kind of to hit bonus that a Fighter does, they have same awesome spellcasting abilities and are able to Turn/Destroy Undead as a special ability. The Druid on the other hand is more 'limiting' when compared to a Cleric.
Of course, there is nothing from stopping you from changing the experience point progression either.

I don't imagine it being a huge deal, the other PCs are a fighter, druid, wizard, and ranger, so nobody should be running huge gaps in terms of PC levels. And the cleric is a lot more effective at 1st level -- he's pretty good at being the front man in combat, and his ability to cast "Sound Burst" has been used to pretty devastating effect against groups of 1st level monsters. It just really surprised me when I checked it before the game last night, I played a cleric or two in 2nd edition and I remember the quicker advancement.

Overall, I think the Cleric XP progression is a bit steep. However, for the reasons mentioned above I have stuck with BTB. Since the cleric is pretty much the lone way to heal party members, they become extra important in the C&C game. Maybe this is one reason the progression is so much steepehr then in previous incarnations of the D&D game.
Sticking with the chart as is, hasn't hindered anybodies games to my knowledge. This is pretty much the lone reason why I leave it alone.
