Interesting/Specialty Magic Items

Post by Nelzie »

When I am running a "D&D" game, I enjoy using the rules/provided magical items as guidelines for the possibilities for the various abilities that magical items can have. I just thought that I would share a few of my recent creations and ask for others to share what they have added to their games.
Selina's Silk Scarf - This beautiful bright red silk scarf is a tight weave of silk, giving it a thick appearance and is worn around the neck with both ends loose over the shoulders by Selina Marcelo. To all onlookers, the scarf appears to be nothing more than a simple accessory. However, when a missile attack is directed at the wearer, the scarf jumps to life! The two loose ends shoot towards and attempts to deflect or grab the oncoming arrow/dagger/rock/dart or whatever from the air. This ability is only usable against two attacks in a round and is not a perfect proof as it only raises the wearer's AC by +5 for those two attacks. This ability can be used against both mundane and magically enhanced missile attacks.
Whip of Swinging - This is handsomely crafted black and brown braided leather whip looks to have been made by a Master Artisan. It is just over 15 feet when fully extended and harbors some minor magical power within its braided length. For purposes of attack, the whip has a +1 magical to hit and damage bonus. For purpose of utility, the wielder need only think of the whip connecting with a surface and the whip will grab a hold of an invisible surface, allowing the wielder to easily swing across an otherwise impassable crevice. While using the whip to swing across a crevice, the whip will extend its length to 25 feet and the wielder, regardless of strength, will be able to remain holding the whip in hand, even if carrying someone of equal weight. At the end of the swing, the whip will release itself from the invisible surface and could be used to grab hold of another invisible surface if need be. Doing so would require a Dexterity Check/Save with an appropriately increasing difficulty depending upon the system being used.

I've got more to share, just thought I would share these to start.

The whip is interesting, and easily abusive. What if you use it to attach to an object and said object is moving?

Nice. Big tough manly fighter types will be wearin' these soon!

If you rule that a normal whip can entangle someone/thing, than this whip would be able to do the same.

The swinging magic is special purpose and only works as described. Attempting to use that magical effect for any other purpose would result in nothing happening beyond what a normal whip (with a magical +1 to hit/damage) is capable of doing. Of course, individual Castle Keeper's are free to alter that as they wish, I just rule it as being specialized in what its magic is capable of doing.

Ooo, oooo! Get two of these, one in each hand, and it'd be just like the old Spiderman cartoons! Web-slinging from nothing to nothing! Sweet!

All my write ups involve artifact/relic type items.

The closest I have to this is the "Staff of Strahd", which is the Staff I had Baron Strahd Von Zarovich, of I6 Ravenloft fame, make.

It is +4 with regards to being a weapon and bonus given to AC and saves, like the Staff of Power in the M&T. Plus it is a staff of Power in all other regards, but has the spells Teleport and Animate Dead added to it.

The coolest thing I thought about doing was adding the Rod of Absorption powers to it for purposes of "recharging" and using charges to feed spells from memory, but I ended up just giving him a Rod of Absorption instead.

Of course to gain this Staff you would have to defeat Strahd in a campaign setting to get it. Plus my Strahd is a 10th level fighter and 14th level mage. The C&C/old D&D version, anyways. My 3E version has him very "Epic". A CR 22 Epic.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

If a CK were to make available two of those to a character, what you describe would indeed be possible and I'd rule that the Challenge Level would never increase when using two such whips.

The Cloak of Hiro Ak'chon.

Hiro was a legendary swordsman. Whose cool demeanor was both intimidating and breath-taking.

Whenever, this cloak is pushed back to reveal a weapon, a slight breeze rustles through the hair of everyone in a 60 ft. radius. Tumbleweed appears and lazily rolls through the area (outside environments only). At the same time everyones favorite tune from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is heard lightly on the air.

The end effect is you look really cool, and people know you mean business.

Technically, it could be a Cloak of Charisma.

Interesting magic objects like this I really like... especially where the effects of the magic are not directly tied to a particular mechanic (especially combat mechanic) in the game. I try to inject magic items like this my games as often as neccessary. Keeps players guessing, and more times then not gives a little bit of roleplaying opportunities.
