Help me Im corn-fused?
Page 6 of MT it states that a 5 d10 creature would have an average of 25 hit points. OK but where does the base of 160 come from?
I see a monster listed with an XP value of 170+7 What? Why not 177? What is the real XP value?
How to h@ll do you read the XP table?
I know light the torches. But please help first.

The + number is what you multiply the actual hit points of the creature with in order to get a number to add to that base.

So if a PC kills the giant eagle on page 29 m&t the EP would be 20X4+60?

If the eagle had 20 hit points rolled up, yes.

I've always had a problem with the XP as used in the M&T. I know there was an error in the example, but knowing that didn't make figuring it out any easier.
So I just go by "chunk XP". When you finish a "chunk" of adventure you get "XP".

I tend to do things the CharlieRock way as well.

"Chunk XP" in this manner can be a problem. Look at the ANKHEG monster in the M&T. This creature has 5 (d10) HP. Looking at the damage output 3d6+1d4 is pretty serious. If the ankheg has 5 HP, that is a whole different threat level then a ankheg with 50 HP. I find that the "chunk XP" method awards too much XP for low HP creatures and far too little for big HP monsters.
Just some thoughts.

Just do what the serleran does... throw XP away. Level the party when you feel they deserve it, based not on class, but on actual play.

For sure the cure is pure - just let it go with the flow and increase with XPs when the clock tocks true.

Having every CK make up their own exp is one option.
But I think fixing the published material that seems to confuse EVERY new player is a better option.
Why publish something if the result is going to be...make something up yourself?
I asked this same question a while ago...and i bet it is a common question.
Compared to other game systems the topic of levelling 'too fast' in C&C is almost funny.
You can turbo charge a snail but no matter how fast the snail moves it is still at a snail's pace.
C&C has attracted me because of the 'Old School' feel. Yet recurring items like a confusing exp system makes me wonder why it has not been clarified or appended yet.
The exp topic seems a common thread of confusion. Just the +4 after the exp value alone has confused myself, you, and everyone in my group when it could have an asterisk that would eliminate many repeated questions.
I guess what I am saying is Troll Lord's has an awesome product. Why not make it better and more user friendly by addressing some of these issues?

Thanks Joe

I have had much the same issue.
However the clarity may be bad in the first printing of the M&T, but mine clearly says the "+5" is a bonus per HP of the creature in the first couple of sentences on page 6.
Then if creatures have abilities that fall into any of the 3 categories you add that for each ability or spell that qualifies.
Serleran clarified to me that every spell of a mage counts too, but you only give them XP's for what was actually cast or used against them in the fight. The M&T is supposed to calculate XP's on the assumption that every power and ability of a monster is used against the party.
So I'm not understanding what is found confusing about XP awards, except for the "Type" awards. Which Serl clarified for me a few days ago.

The part that messes with me is remembering if it was the chart that was off or the text. After I second guess myself once or twice I give up. After giving up a few times I realized we were well into an adventure and I was at a loss for what XP was supposed to have been earned. So I gave out the chunk-o-XP.
Kind of been doing that since.

The chart method assumes you calculate, in theory, before, or after the encounter... not "on the fly" as it were. That would be easy to do, though, with some tweakage.

The how too explanation below the chart is off.
I thought that it was fixed for the second printing. But we fixed a lot of stuff and might have missed something. ^_~`

I was not asked about the XP chart as errata for the 2nd print. I was about the other fixes.

Well. In short the procedure seems to be thus.
Find the # of HD of a given critter you want to create on the chart.
Move over to the column marked "Base" Thats your starting point.
The creatures hit points determine the amount of extra experience one gains from the creature, which was explained earlier.
If a given creature has any special abilities that fall into one of the 3 categories, add the amount determined by the # of HD of the creature and the column on the chart.
Evidently the 'example' was corrected in the second printing of the M&T.. so that is what I am going by.
