Order of the Lunar Knights
Order of the Lunar Knights
This order is in the Airhde setting, originally in the D20 Codex of Erde.
I'll be presenting this write up when two of my players, Rhuvein and Aramis, are done giving me feedback and I finish the write up.
This order is different in that it not only has Knights, but accepts any class as long as the Character is committed to the over all goals and causes of this order. So Paladins, fighters, Bards, Clerics, Wizards, Thieves and even Assassins are known to have been members of this order.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

No, but over 90% of them are.

Well, other than what I see on page 198 in the Codex, I don't really have much to contribute. So that's good in that it leaves the order open for fleshing out and building it based on your own interpretations.
Incidentally, I don't see mention of thieves, assassins and bards in this order. Is that info buried somewhere else in the Codex?

Shhh!
I told Jorel I was but a travelling scholar who, periodically, rides into a town, and rides out 3 days later, bodies lying in my wake
"Buried somewhere"? Yeah, I've buried more than a few

As I recall, I sketched out my character to Treebore at the outset ("assassin for good") and he asked for a group that made sense for that. I made one up, but then he had a better idea and folded me into the Lunar Knights because a) Jorel was already there b)the goals of the group I made up was similar to what the Knights were doing. So it was a convenience thing
I would not know what to add to what is in the Codex myself. Although you should probably come up with some more specific allies, enemies and geographical representations lists.
I see my character's role as I have played him. Travelling the realms, gathering information about concentrations of the evil ones, and periodically, terminating them with extreme prejudice

Haha, so you're "The Stranger" who ride into town in High Plains Drifter??
Heh, that means I'm Mordecai!

Oh OK. Excellent. You'd think that after playing for so many months, I would remember this!!!
I do love the idea of a good assassin. I played one years ago as a sharpshooter/marksmen challenged to take out captains of roving monster bands or tough assed monsters. I think it's a great variation of the assassin class.
Anyway, desperate times call for desperate measures, so a knight order having assassins can work, especially when the final battle against evil and Unklar is imminent!!

Edit: Since this is now up for publication I now claim copyright on this. I still give permission for private use in personal games, though. Just no reposting to other message boards, or other forms of public sharing.
The final published version has all references to Airhde or its gods/towns removed.
OK, here is more info about the Order, by no means complete, but will do the job for now:
Order of the Lunar Knights
The Order is very simplistic.
Its established around the goal of defending the world, their lands, and their people. Primarily from the forces of Unklar. The members can be from almost any class, Knights, Paladins, Fighters, Rangers, Wizards, Monks, Bards, and Clerics. They are almost exclusively Elven, but other races have been members in the past. The primary requirement for joining is a commitment to protect and fight against the forces of Unklar, and by extension, other forces of evil. Race and class is very secondary to that. Evil is definitely not acceptable.
Members of the order are not only expected to accomplish the over all goal, they are also expected to help the order have financial resources to support the members and their over all goal. They are also expected to answer any call to arms issued by the order, unless doing so would leave the lives of those unable to protect themselves at risk.
So members are expected to strive to pay at least 100 GP to the order coffers per year. If a order member becomes, or is, rich, they are expected to financially support the order as much as they can. That definition is left up to the conscience of the individual member.
What the order offers in support:
AS for most orders, it offers a sanctuary to all members and their allies.
It offers a way to rally great numbers of like minded allies when such is needed against a discovered threat.
It offers a network of friends and alliances with groups and individuals who are not members of the order, but share overlapping goals. These alliances and friendships give members a network to obtain rare items, magic items, high quality items, training, knowledge, and any other resources. One obvious such benefit is a source for trained Griffons. Another is to get items enchanted with specified spells by high level enchanters. Discount prices may or may not be available.
It offers an extended family of friendships to help a member of the order to live a good life, while they make many sacrifices so others may live a safe life.
Leadership of the order is very loose. Essentially positions of leadership are filled by those willing and able to fill them. They use simple military ranks to make these distinctions. A common member is simply called a soldier. You then have a Sargent, who will lead squads which can number up to 20 men. You then have First Sargents, who can command up to 3 full squads. The next highest rank is Leftenant, who commands up to 5 full squads.
Then you have a Captain, who can command up to 10 full squads and/or is responsible for the safety and security of specific lands belonging to the order. Leftenants can also be called on to fulfill such responsibilities if there are not enough Captains.
Then there are Commanders who are in charge of Brigades, made up of up to 30 full squads (600 men) and are often responsible for the oversite and co ordinated operation and defense of Order lands in a specified area or region containing 2 or more properties of the Order. You then have Generals who are in command of any number of Brigades, depending on the needs determined by the nature of the military opponent or opponents being engaged. Typically it will be a minimum of two Brigades, but can be just one, or even 20 Brigades. Generals in time of peace are in over all command of the Orders business' and properties in a given Kingdom, or larger regions if there is no unifying government, such as areas filled with many City-States.
Then there is the Commander General. He or she is the over all commander of the Order, and co ordinates and commands all the troops in times of warfare, and does the same for all of the Orders properties and businesses when and where there is peace.
The current Commander General is Callis Roaning. A fiery red haired Paladin dedicated to the Norse god of Law, Justice, and Vengeance, Tyr the Grim Lord. She has served Tyr for many centuries, and it is well known she wears armor that makes her nearly invulnerable in battle and seems to also have made her immortal. This is believed because she is said to be human, but does look very Fey, and has been in the Order for over 300 years. She was also critical in the banishment of Unklar, by distracting him from the actions of other god like beings so they could banish him from Airhde, as he has been for nearly a century now.
It is also known that she is capable of calling on Tyr to resurrect the dead. Or to heal all injuries and ailments.
She is also known to possess the Eyes and Ears of Heimdall (a Battle Helm), as well as Tyr's sword, Justice. Some think the sword may actually be Durendale, despite Callis' being directly asked and clearly stating that it is not.
She does openly admit to being the Keeper of Tyr's Book of Judgement.
Those who worry about such things would say CG Callis Roaning is one of the most powerful beings in the world of Airhde. Only the gods may know since it is also known that no divinations about her ever get results.
Commander General Roaning has made it known she no longer wishes to serve as the CG, but no one has stepped forward in the last century to take the job from her. She still remains committed to her fight against Unklar and all evil, no matter what her status within the order.
She is known to currently be in New Aenoch overseeing the building of a new Temple to Tyr on the lands of Baron Berethor Amter, Knight of the Invisible Flame, Captain of the Vigilant Flame of Diamond Vale for the Order of the Phoenix, a founding member of the Company of the Winter Wolf, Bane of Unklar, and Paladin of Tyr.
Note: The religion of the Commander General in no way means or determines the religion of the Order itself. It is better to think of the Order as a mortal representation of the alliance of gods of Airhde committed to keeping Unklar defeated as well as fighting and defeating evil in general. So servants of many gods are found within the order.
This does help members of the Order, because many churches/temples of these numerous gods will aid members of the order, despite their faith in a different deity.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
