Smash Open Doors & Point Blank Shots?

Post by Joe »

Ok,

I ran my second C&C session.

2 questions came up.

What does it take to smash open a door?

Is there an attack roll penalty for a point blank missile attack?

It takes the CK to decide what it takes; there aren't any hardness or HP rules for items in C&C, so, probably an ad hoc Strength check against some difficulty.

No, usually there is a bonus, but this, again, is not covered by the rules as I recall. I'd give a +2.

Strength check with a CL decided by the GM based on how hard the door would be to break down. Point Blank shots: not covered under the rules that I can find but I would give a +2 like Serleran and probably let a thief sneak attack if the target in your given scenario were caught unawares and the thief knew there was a target there to attack.

In AD&D, most PCs could open a door 33% of the time (2:6), and very strong individuals could open a door 50% - 67% of the time (3:6 or 4:6). If you give a CL0 for the average "difficult" door, you get:

10 Str, Not Prime = 15% chance (die roll 18 or better)

10 Str, Prime = 45% chance (die roll 12 or better)

13 Str, Not Prime = 20% chance (die roll 17 or better)

13 Str, Prime = 50% chance (die roll 11 or better)

16 Str, Not Prime = 25% chance (die roll 16 or better)

16 Str, Prime = 55% chance (die roll 10 or better)

18 Str, Not Prime = 30% chance (die roll 15 or better)

18 Str, Prime = 60% chance (die roll 9 or better)

That's probably a reasonable approach, if you're using the SIEGE engine for opening stuck doors.

I wouldn't give a modifier for point blank range; I'd just consider it part of close range.
