So I'm going to try C&C over the holidays.
So I'm going to try C&C over the holidays.
A little background: I'm a twenty-three year old college student. I've been playing D&D for nearly thirteen years, that is, since I was ten. I started back in the 2E era, also playing a little classic and 1E with different groups. I was also an early adopter of both 3E and (despite some misgivings) 3.5. However, over the last couple of years I've grown more and more dissatisfied with 3.x. This is mostly because our combats feel like we're playing chess, and as a DM I've also noticed that the crunchiness of the ruleset tends to facilitate minmaxing. The other big problem is that I can no longer improvise effectively, which pretty much precludes pick-up games and casual play. Preparing adventures takes too much time and number-crunching. Also, 3.5 is really hard to teach to new gamers, especially the ones I often recruit who are artistic types, interested in literature, and have little patience for complex rules or tactical combat. There are other issues, but those are the main ones.
So, I picked up the C&C PH (2nd printing) last year, and although I was initially excited, I have to admit I was a little disappointed with some things, mostly what I perceived as sloppy editing. This turned me off from the game a little bit and I never got around to 'playtesting' it, although mostly because I've been busy with school.
Now, I'm playing in a mostly fun 3.5 campaign (despite the slow combats and page-flipping), but I don't want to go back to DMing 3.5, and 4E sounds like it might be moving in the exact opposite direction from what I would want.
So I've taken out my C&C PH again and am having a second look at it. There are some obviously wonky things in there like the poigniard doing 1d8 damage (I see there's a thread up about that!), but I'm willing to ignore that kind of thing if the game plays better than 3.5 and makes DMing fun for me again. I'm planning to run a few games of C&C over the holidays, probably for my partner, sister, and a few old D&D buddies in my home town. I'm thinking about starting off with Rising Knight, though if I have time I might write something up myself.
I would appreciate any advice that you all might have about running my first C&C games. Anything I should know? How can I make this the best gaming experience possible?

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Ok, I have not been playing C&C very long at all but I will relate what I have found so far.
I got C&C as part of my collect everything RPG Habbit. It looked cool and neat but totally incomplete. I was expecting ..more. I wanted game that was simple yet complete that covered most the rules that would come up in one or two books and frankly C&C didnt look like it was it.
I forgot about it and tried other things for a while but kept ending up unhappy.
So I took another look at C&C and went to the boards and when I read one post a light went on in my head and I started going nuts.
I read that in C&C it was perfectly fine to mix and match rules from D&D as you saw fit. Not only was it fine but it was assumed you would do so!
I have no clue why that made such a impact on me but it did. A few minutes after that I was raiding my old D&D notebooks for house rules. Digging my old books up and swapping out rules. Some C&C,some from 1st edition D&D and some even from 2nd and 3.5 edition.
I was slapping together the PERFECT game system for me! It was freedom that I had not seen in a long time.
Not only can I use all my old adventures"some that I have not used in 20 years" but I can buy the old pdf's cheap! Also I can use even the 3.5 stuff as well as the new C&C stuff!
I guess what I wanted to tell you is use C&C to make your own perfect system and to heck with everything else. Do what is fun and works for you! If you do then you will be playing C&C as it was meant to be played.

Thanks, Treebore and serleran.
How would I go about listening to one of the skype games?
Download the free version of SKYPE (they kind of hide it, but its there) and then go to tools and add a new user.
treebore.therubylord
Then, at about 5 PM CST tomorrow look to see me on line, send me a chat, and we'll go from there.
Just make sure to mention these boards/C&C etc... so I know your not some spammer, etc...
Or you can download and create your account and post your SKYPE ID here and I'll look for you tomorrow.

That's kind of what got me too. I thought, "Hey, I can use this as a Super Universal Console of sorts and play all of those old, classic adventures i never got to experience via cheap .pdf's." I'v e started to get into the modularity of the system itself in the last couple months and like to bring in a lot of old 2nd edition rules/house rules.
Me three. I just ordered a pile of Green Ronin stuff for my C&C games. Next stop, TLG's site.

Welcome Blackwind.
Rising Knight is a great intro module, although you might want to read over dungeon level 2 to see if it might be over powering for you group. A mix of 5-6 adventurers should be OK.
With regard to running C&C for the first time, I would only say, be sure to read and understand the info on SEIGE checks ~ challenge level, challenge base & challenge class. With that knowledge you will be able to unleash the total power and awesomeness of the SEIGE engine and thus the game!
Enjoy!

Me FOUR!
I'm kinda in the same boat. I bought C&C over a year ago, read it and was unimpressed. It also felt incomplete to me. Then after another year of playing 3.5 one of my friends said we should try this game called C&C. I said "I think I have that". And since 4th sounds like they are going in a direction I don't care for I started reading up on my C&C stuff.
When I realized it was supposed to be just the bare bones and very modular I was so happy. No more spending hours making up stats for NPC's. It's even faster when using a module.
So now I have an adventure path from Goodman games and my C&C books and I'm ready to start my campaign over the holidays also. In about 2 weeks actually. I'm so excited. I hope it goes well and is received well by my players.

...and ditto on the 'use loads o' other stuff with C&C' idea.
As soon as I picked up the core books, I turned to a pile of 1st edition D&D modules on a shelf at the gaming store, turned to my wife and said: "I can use this, this, and this, etc."
C&C just kinda fits everything.
I know for some who haven't played it, that sounds weird -like what can't you modify for any game?
But C&C really lends itself better to this task somehow.
I'm having a freaking ball using d20, AD&D, etc stuff with it.
