Shackled City with C&C?

Post by shane »

I've just recently started my first ever D&D 3.x campaign, the Shackled City adventure path, using Fantasy Grounds II. So so far so good. But I know the players - my wife and my best pal - are pretty keen on old school gaming and have expressed interest in continuing the Shackled City with C&C, especially considering there's a C&C ruleset for FGII.

So wadda y'all think? Will C&C work well with the higher level stuff in Shackled City? Is it just a matter of substituting 1st Ed critters and going with that?

I;ve never run anything that high in C&C, but for the most part it could work. OR wait until the CKG is released early next year to see high level characters...

C&C does not have the same assumptions that d20 does... so, go slowly with it.

We've just started so the characters are still 1st level. I've read other gamer's accounts that say it took them 2 years of weekly gaming to complete the campaign. I'm guessing we have some time before the high level stuff.

I didn't do SCAP but I did do the Dragonlance age of Mortals using C&C. The characters were 20th level at the end and it worked extremely well.

For average mooks I just used the d20 stat block, simply ignoring parts I didn't need. For the big baddies, I did a conversion to C&C.

Sure, the high level d20 stuff was a bit higher powered than C&C norm, but it worked out really well. Especially having a wizard in the party. HIgh level C&C wizard can wipe the floor with things. So, the extra "oomph" for the high level mooks was appreciated.

That'll be funny. Our wizard is a cross-eyed Gnome with a limp.

There are a couple of us here that are running SCAP. My campaign is still in Chapter 1 but Kelro has a game that is up into Ch. 4 or 5. He has introduced a lot of side treks because the XP progression in C&C is a lot slower. He's been running it for about 1.5 years.

I have files of someones work converting this to C&C, likely someone already mentioned in this thread, I don't know how far they went, but I know it was a dozen or so monsters and a bit of other DM/CK notes.

PM me your e-mail and I'll share it like it was shared with me.

As has been stated, it's doable but please take it slowly because D20 is much more high-powered than C&C, especially at higher levels. You will also want to give out more XP so that the PCs stay in line with the campaigns level assumptions.

I have up to Chapter 4 converted to C&C. If you would like me to send you what I have feel free to ping me.

We are taking it slow, I have thrown in plenty of other material. I mostly look to Goodman Game modules, Dungeon magazine, and even some of Paizo's new modules for ideas. Specifically, I have ran The Scaly God and They Mysterious Tower adventures from GG. I will probably also stick in The Sunken Temple or Ziggurat or something...cant remember the name now...and probably The Slithering Overlord too.

I have also changed and will be changing much of the end of the campaign as written. I would highly recommend going over to therpggenius and browsing the various files available there, especially delvesdeep stuff is really good. You can read more about what he has done on the Paizo forums.

Or, you can just tell the PCs to level when its time for them to level according to the campaign, and run SCAP with much less fiddling on your part. Thats what I would do if I were to do another published adventure path with C&C.

Hey, cool!

When I'm ready to switch over I'll revisit this topic. I'm guessing we'll probably play to about 6th or 7th level with D&D before doing the switch. But the players could surprise me and demand we switch right away. Anyway, I'll be back with this.

I like the idea of adding side adventures.
