Secondary Skills from CZ

Post by Aladar »

Have any of you all used Gary Gygax's Secondary Skills option from the "Castle Zagyg: Class Options & Skills for Yggsburgh" PDF for your C&C campaigns?

If so, did it work out o.k.? Any problems?

It is one of the options I am thinking about using in my upcoming C&C Forgotten Realms campaign and I just wanted to get a feel if the system works alright.

I believe Peter makes ample use of them, and Antonio has created a few more, but, I, personally don't use them, preferring to just allow PCs to create whatever class they want, and ignore secondary things (new abilities can be built in existing classes with commensurate XP costs.) On the whole, I think some are slightly too costly, but for what they do, that might not be so bad... but, in others, I think its just a little over-powerful in that they can allow dual-classing without the costly dual-classing.

I do not use them, as I am a straight up fan of Secondary Skills from 1E DMG.

That's what I plan to use. Simple, quick and adds a bit of flavor and variance to the character.

Exactly how I see it. Want to add a little bit more flavor and still keep skills simple, allow the players to pick the secondary skills they want. It's more customizable and you still get an extra bit to role play out.

*smiles* I modified my approach a bit and use the 'text' of the skills with the percentage based idea I rambled about in another thread.

Thanks for the answers. Some of the skills did seem a little over the top.

I like the idea of using the secondary skills from 1st Ed (which was something I was also considering to keep it simple).

Wasn't there a secondary skill system in the old Basic D&D/Rules Cyclopedia? It has been so long, I can't remember.

In general, I find that the more I game and run games, the less formal I want to be. Instead, I want to use any game as a teaching tool to enable people to express their 'characters' for themselves.

I guess it comes of hanging out with a whole lot of theatrical folk over the last 30 + years.

You must hear a lot of Broadway show tunes at your games. Being a theatre major in college, I heard more songs from Broadway than I ever asked for. I must be the only one that doesn't care for musicals compared to other theatrical forms.
