Assassins - No backstab??

I understand Assassins get sneak attack and the death attack, but it just seems back stab should be there too.

Sneak attack is just a weaker version of back stab. It doesn't have the same damage potential.

Death attack requires 3 rounds of study and if the target makes his Con save, its only a +4 damage/sneak attack.

Back stab can do x3 damage at 5th level, or x4 damage at 9th level with no "save".

Maybe its just me.....

Assassins do not get backstab because they death attack instead, which is not as limited, and more limited, than BS. Its also more powerful, considering a level 1 assassin can theoretically drop a 16th level for; backstab cannot unless that 16th level guy is close to death already.

ha! BS is right. The Assassin's Death Attack is so powerful as written it's astonishing. However there are some cool ideas floating around these boards in regards to adjusting an Assassin's TOTALLY AWESOME Death Attack... but that is for another tread.
