I've been thinking about the idea of secondary class abilities (SCA) as opposed to primary class abilities as per rule book.
A SCA would give a +1 per 2 levels to an ability check - so a non rogue character character could have climb for example as a SCA
Other options could be survival as a SCA for barbarians
need to think more on how to control access to SCA but in principal what do you think.
Would work well with unhooked Primaries and use of half primaries (+3) for character generation.

I usually thought of survival being a Con check so it was a prime for a barbarian anyway.
I think it sounds okay in principle. Might tick off the human dominant half-elves since it dilutes their "Secondary" racial ability somewhat.
You'd need this sort of thing, or a skill system of sorts, if your going to be very detail oriented.
