EV For C &C

Post by dutch206 »

I have a problem with the Encumbrance Value rules for Castles and Crusades. The average human has an EV of 10. A backpack containing a 1 gallon waterskin and seven days worth of food has an EV of 8. That leaves no room for rope, torches, loot, weapons, armor, etc.....

Did I miss something?

According to the 3rd printing of the C&C PHB:

Backpack = 2(w) EV

Waterskin (1 Gallon) = 3 EV

That would mean that if the commoner was wearing the backpack and carrying the waterskin, the total EV would be 4. If the commoner was carrying the backpack and the waterskin, the EV would be 5.

Remember that base EV of 10 is modified by STR modifier and a further +2 for STR PRIME and +2 for CON PRIME.

But 10 would be a good base EV for a commoner.

What Omote said, and don't forget to also check out *this* thread:

I point it out because these changes where not implemented in the 3rd (and latest) printing of the PHB .

I had a problem with the encumbrance system in general. My solution: ignore it. Encumbrance is no fun and therefore has no place in my game. I just told my players that I will tell them if they get too heavy to move. Encumbrance is probably the easiest C&C rule to ignore.

True... I tend to use it during the character creation phase in part so that player's know what their load is at. I essentially tell them to keep that in mind when picking up and getting other stuff. In the long run... they often find a way to part with a weapon when they switch up to a new or different one without me having to prompt them too much.

Cheeplives' solution seems to make the most sense: half EV for every item in the backpack. I like it!

I tend to use Encumberance when creating characters and then ignore it. As GM, I usually say "Gee, that much treasure is going to require a bag of holding or a handy haversack".

I ignore it. I even ignore it when it comes to some otherwise not-logical situations, like carrying rugs and whatnot... its all depends on what I want the party to get away with, and what not.
