My Campaign World

Post by JonusBlackthorn »

Hey since everyone else is posting stuff about their campaign worlds I thought I would post some info about mine. I've been working on this Campaign setting on and off for the last 20 years so here it goes.

The History of Arnu

The following is the history of creation according to both the elves of Arnu and the Church of Unnor. There are many other creation mythologies present in the various cultures and races throughout the lands of Arnu, but this is the most widely known and is generally accepted as the truth.
Time Before Time
In the beginning

In the void before time began there was Unnor who is called The One. From his mind he created the celestials, who were beings of pure spirit, to serve him in the void. For untold eons Unnor dwelled in void with his creations, teaching them great mysteries. It then came to pass that Unnor formed the great sphere where he placed the world of Tarrea and its moon. Unnor then created a great light in the center of the sphere and set Tarrea in a course about the light. He then created other lights within the sphere these were stars and other planets.

After the universe was formed Unnor gathered his servants and displayed his creation to them. All the cellestials were in awe of its splendor, all that is, save one. The celestial named Morgath was filled with great envy over Unnors power and began to sow dissention among the celestials. Unnor perceived his thoughts but was not dissuaded for all was as he had planned. Unnor turned his attention to the world of Tarrea and began to form new things. The celestials were again in awe as plants, and animals began to populate the world. Unnor then fashioned a great valley in which he placed the Great Tree whose fruit could heal and sustain and would provide great wisdom. If eaten improperly or without permission though it would grant the knowledge of good and evil, and cause death. Unnor then fashioned the race of Elves to tend the forested valley. They were slender yet strong and filled with wisdom and eternal life as they were given permission to freely eat of the Great Tree. The celestials were enthralled by these new beings for they were spirit yet were clothed with a permanent physical body.
The War in Heaven

After the elves were created Morgath was enraged and gathering many celestials to his side attempted to overthrow Unnor and his servants. In order to prepare for battle, Unnor gathered his five chief celestials to himself and showed them the deep secrets to creating living beings. He then tasked them to create their own races. The first celestials to fashion a race were Aerelis and Stellaris. They based their creations on the Lammasu, which are lesser servants of Unnor. These beings they called the sphinx and in like manner to Elves Aerelis created the male Androsphinx and Stellaris created the female Gynosphinx. Next, the celestial named Sayela fashioned the race called gnomes. Fanamor went next creating the race of dwarves. The last celestial to fashion a race was Larnyr. He created the aquatic race of the merfolk. Unnor then breathed life into these new races who along with the Elves formed a great army that stood ready to battle. The army they would face was formed by many of the dark races that exist today. For in the secret dark places of Tarrea Morgath and his allies had attempted to create their own races and having failed had instead perverted and corrupted the creations of the other celestials. The two armies clashed upon the surface of Tarrea as the celestials battled in the heavens. This great battle shattered the great sphere and the universe expanded to fill the void. These rebellious celestials were soon defeated and fled and hid in the world. They would forevermore be known as demons.
The Creation of Man

After the war most of the races, both good and foul were allowed to expand and settle the world in the hope that the good races would through example teach the foul races and redeem them. Unnor then gathered the elven and dwarven races to himself and tasked them to create a great valley. The dwarves used ancient magic long forgotten to raise grand peaks and within those peaks the elves planted and tended a great forest called Elderwood. The elves and dwarves lived in relative peace within the valley with the elves tending the forest and the dwarves building grand cities along the valleys edge. Unnor once again decided to turn his attention to creation, only this time in his own image. This race was called humanity. After this Unnor rested declaring his creation complete, and left the elves, dwarves and man and woman to care for the valley.
Morgath Tempts Mankind

The three races dwelt in the valley in peace but all was not well in the rest of the world. Morgath and his minions were busy encouraging their foul races to tempt the races of good. Many fell but the elves, dwarves, and most importantly the man and woman remained pure. Morgath became obsessed with Unnors latest creation and snuck into the valley of Elderwood. He sought out the man and woman and his sweet lies charmed them and he convinced them to eat from the Great Tree. With the first bite they gained much knowledge and sorrow. Unnor sensing what they had done appeared before them and they cowered in fear. Seeing their fear He clothed the man and woman and sent them out of the valley into the world. He also sent the dwarves to watch over them and to aid them in adjusting to their new environment.

I know it has been a while, been kinda busy getting ready for the new school year. so here is part II
The First Age
(Approx. 2100 B.E. 600 B.E.)

Dates given in this section are approximate and are based on the founding of the Irridian Empire which is considered year one in Irridian Reckoning (I.R.). Any dates prior to the founding of the Empire are given the designator B.E. (Before Empire)
The First Empire (2063 B.E.)

Over the years man began to multiply and spread out across the plains until they reached the sea. As they grew in number so did the evil in their hearts and soon they began to see the dwarves as an enemy. The dwarves on the other hand began to be corrupted by humanity. Both races soon established great societies as they expanded across the world and came into contact with many of the other races of the world. Most soon forgot the valley and Unnor but some men and dwarves still remembered and were faithful.

As man continued to expand across the surface of Tarrea they began t form small communities and leaders began to arise from within their ranks to become the great kings of old. These kings raised up armies for mutual defense against the foul races of the world. They forged strong alliances in order to maintain a delicate peace and to stand united against their common foe.

One such kingdom was called Arn. Arn was located in what is now the Empire of Irridia. The king of Arn was named Pollis and he was a great commander of the armies of men, but his heart was wicked and lusted after power. He decided in his heart to expand his lands and began to attack the surrounding Kingdoms. He first went to war with the kingdoms of Damcal to the north and Olafgith to the east and defeated their kings in battle. He then declared himself the Emperor and renamed his lands Arnon. He then went on to battle with Fanaela to the far west and Bucroth which was further east and conquered both lands. This forced the eastern kingdoms of Tarn, Hesnare, and Agmar to form an alliance called the Golden Triad.
Birth of Tyrant (1206 B.E.)

During this time Morgath was making war on the kingdoms of man and gathering followers from many places. One of these followers was a priestess named Damaris. She gave herself willingly to the Dark Lord and he took her and laid with her. She in turn became pregnant, but as the time drew near for the child to be born, the true horror of what she had done became apparent. The child was a monster and devoured her mother from within, and so was born Tyrant the mother of all dragons. Tyrant soon grew to enormous size and gave birth to many of her kind, for she had been born pregnant. Her offspring however were not born so.
The Dwarf-Man War
(1076 B.E. 1026 B.E.)

As the Empire of Arnon grew in power so did their greed. They began to turn their eyes toward the glittering hordes of the dwarves. The relations between the two races had been strained for many years and the time was ripe for the various forces of darkness to manipulate the situation. The War lasted for 50 years and finally ended when the great cataclysm drove the elves from Elderwood and sundered the southern end of Arnu.
The War of the Tree (? 1026 B.E.)

Meanwhile all was not well in Elderwood, as the demon called Lillith had managed to sneak into the valley undetected by the celestials. Though Unnor knew what she intended to do, he allowed it to transpire. Lillith gained the confidence of many elves and began to persuade them that they who have been faithful should be allowed to taste of the Great Tree. This lead to a great debate among the elves and finally to them taking up arms against one another. A small group of elves though sought out Unnors will. Unnor sent the celestial Sayela to the elves. She instructed them to take a fruit from the tree and flee from the valley. The war began and much blood was shed until finally one of the commanders made it to the tree and was about to eat of the fruit. This is when Unnor declared his judgment and the valley was destroyed with a great fire from above and a cataclysmic earthquake that sundered the southern end of Arnu.
The Second War of Heaven
(Approx. 1025 B.E.)

Soon after the War of the Trees, Morgath once again attempted to claim the throne of heaven. This war soon spilled over into the physical world and soon celestials and demons were battling in the skies over Arnu. Many people during this time though it was the end of the world. Morgath of course enlisted the aide of Tyrant and her children, though there was a few dragons which sided with the celestials, chief among them was palladium. He was Tyrants first born son and held great sway over the rare and gifted metallic dragons. The demons once again failed and Morgath was imprisoned within the center of the moon. It is for this reason that the moon holds sway over those afflicted with Lycanthropy. The celestials also cursed Tyrant by transforming her into a human woman.

Looks real good.
I've been doing a lot more sketching as of late, but I'm still not there yet (for public display).

Serleran, You asked about the gods, got some of it typed up. Haven't done any of the evil deities yet but the good gods are done. Here ya go:
Unnor the One
Symbol: A simple white disc symbolizing wholeness or all that is.
Alignment: True Good
Worshippers: Anyone
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Good, Neutral Good, and Chaotic Good
Favored Weapon: Broad Sword

Unnor is the creator of all and was present in the void before there was anything else. He is seen as a righteous judge and a merciful father by those who worship him. There are many diverse followers of Unnor, but the two most powerful churches that follow his teachings are the High Church of Irridia and the Church of the Way. The High Church of Irridia stresses ritual and strict adherent to the tenets of the faith. They have at times gone to the extreme excommunicating devout followers for violating trivial church laws and doctrines. In most cases though they tend to be open and forgiving as Unnor is a god of second chances. The Church of the Way stresses a more personal faith. Though still stressing moral living and adherence to certain doctrines and rituals, they tend to focus more on Unnors redemptive and merciful nature.

Followers of Unnor can be of any good alignment with those in the High Church tending more toward lawful good and those in the Church of the Way tending more toward chaotic good. Priests of Unnor have all the abilities of standard clerics though they tend to focus on spells of protection and healing. This is not to say that they do not at times act as instruments of Unnors wrath, they just find it easier to win converts and influence through more peaceful solutions.
The Celestial Host

The Celestial Host is the collective term for the five celestials that aided Unnor in the creation of Tarrea. They are usually revered along with Unnor by the respective races that helped to fashion, though some members of other races usually of specific character classes may also revere them. These celestials are worshipped along with and as subordinates to Unnor and do not desire nor tolerate worship directed solely at them.
Aerelis
Lord of the Wind
Symbol: A pure white eagle or hawk
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshippers: Androsphinxes, Gynosphinxes, Grey Elves, Rogues
Cleric Alignments: Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, and Chaotic Neutral
Favored Weapon: Long Sword

Aerelis is the most powerful of the Celestial Host and is often looked upon as the leader of the Celestials. Like most celestials, Aerelis is of elven appearance with pointed ears reminiscent of a gnome. He is often depicted in paintings as a warrior carrying a long sword and a golden shield emblazoned with a white eagle. Aerelis is the patron of all those who value freedom and adherents will often aide in overthrowing tyrants.
Fanamor
The Dwarf Lord
Symbol: A Black Hammer or Axe
Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshippers: Dwarves, Craftsmen, Fighters, Barbarians
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Good, Neutral Good, and Lawful Neutral
Favored Weapon: War Hammer or Battle Axe

Though not as powerful as Aerelis, Fanamor is by far the greatest warrior among the Celestial Host. He crafted the dwarven race from the stone of the earth and was present when Unnor breathed life into his children. He is the patron of craftsmen, warriors, and dwarves and in particular dwarven craftsmen and warriors. Like his brethren he appears elf-like with gnomish ears, though he is shorter and stockier not unlike his children. He is often depicted with fiery red hair and a neatly braided beard. He is often shown brandishing a golden battle axe set with diamonds and rubies.
Larnyr
Lord of the Seas
Symbol: a Blue Whale or Dolphin
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshippers: Merfolk, Sailors, Fishermen, Sea Elves
Cleric Alignments: Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, and Chaotic Neutral
Favored Weapon: Trident or Spear

Larnyr is often depicted wearing silver and blue garments that match his long silvery hair. His image often appears on the bows of ships and in frescos in the halls of sea-elves. Larnyr is the patron of all those that sail upon the seas and all those that dwell beneath its waves. His followers are often targeted by the followers of Morgath as Larnyr is the celestial who rerouted the Elder River that once flowed through what is now the Wokari Desert.
Sayela
The Huntress
Lady of the Wood
Symbol: A White stag or a white oak tree
Alignment: Neutral Good
Worshippers: Gnomes, Elves, Halflings, Druids, Rangers
Cleric Alignments: Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, and Lawful Good
Favored Weapon: longbow

Sayela is the protector of forests and woodlands and is much revered among both gnomes and elves. Even some Halflings show her honor as do most of the fey of Arnu. Sayela appears as a beautiful and strong elf maiden with gnome-like ears. She is often dressed in fabrics of greens and browns and carries a finely crafted long bow made of yew. It is said that her arrows never miss their mark and that one such arrow pierced the breast of Tyrant and left a scar that was even present when cursed to her human form.
Stellaris
Lady of the Stars
The Warrior Maiden
Symbol: A golden eight pointed star
Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshippers: Androsphinxes, Gynosphinxes, Grey Elves, Female Paladins, Astronomers and Alchemists
Cleric Alignments: Neutral Good, Lawful Good, and Chaotic Good
Favored Weapon: Long Sword and lance

Stellaris is the patron of women of all races that are abused and abandoned. Many female paladins flock to her banner, most having been abused or enslaved themselves. It is also told that she helped to hang the stars and is often considered the patron of Astronomers and Alchemists. Stellaris is usually depicted as an elven maiden with gnome-like ears clad in white armor and wielding a long sword in each hand. Her long flowing hair is golden in color and seems to shine with a pale light.
Other Celestials

Other Celestials may also be worshipped and revered by individuals throughout Arnu but as with the Celestial Host they do not seek, desire, or tolerate worship directed solely at them, choosing instead to be subordinate to Unnor.

Here is the rest of the gods that I have developed for my campaign setting.
The Lords of Darkness

The Lords of Darkness is the Title given to the most powerful Demon Lords that are actively worshipped as gods in Arnu. The following are the most common and well known, though by no means only Lords of Darkness.
Baltor
Lord of the Undead
Symbol: A pale yellow skull
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Worshippers: Anyone of Evil Alignment
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil
Favored Weapon: Scythe or Spear
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Baltor have the ability to rebuke undead.

Baltor is usually depicted as a pale yellow skeleton wearing a black robe with glowing red eyes. He is called the lord of the undead and he along with his minions is responsible for animating the undead of Arnu. His greatest servant is the horrible Lich Lord of Darkholm. His worshippers are foul necromancers who bring terror and destruction wherever they travel. Baltor is a chief rival for control over the demonic hordes of Arnu and his followers at time will actively seek to foil the schemes of Morgaths followers
Lacera
Goddess of Wine and Pleasures
Symbol: grape vine
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshippers: Anyone of Evil Alignment
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil
Favored Weapon: Dagger or Cat-O-Nine-Tails
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Lacera may attempt to Charm Person as the spell once per day per level of the cleric. This replaces the normal turn undead ability.

Lacera is worshipped as the goddess of pleasure and hedonism. She incites lust and wanton abandon in her followers and plots the destruction of morals within society. She is often depicted as a scantily clad woman holding a goblet of wine or a ranch of grapes. Lacera has many temples in cities that lie on the outskirts of civilization. She is actively supporting Baltor against Morgath but this is more out of a hatred for Morgath that once spurned her advances choosing instead the human priestess Damaris.
Lilith
The Dark Lady
Symbol: A black widow spider
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Worshippers: Drow
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Evil and Neutral Evil
Favored Weapon: Morningstar
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Lillith possess the ability to Charm Spiders. This ability is similar to the rebuke undead ability of evil clerics but applies to all types of giant spiders.

Lillith is the demon responsible for starting the War of the Tree. When the elves that had desired to eat of the tree first fled into the earth, it was Lillith that led them and helped them to survive. She offered them power in return for their worship. They were forever grateful for her aide and have revered her ever since. She is usually depicted as a Drow maiden of great and terrible beauty. Lillith has pledge her support for Morgath over Baltor.
Mollis
The Formless One
Symbol: Mollis has no symbol
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshippers: Aboleths and other aberations
Cleric Alignments: Neutral Evil and Chaotic Evil
Favored Weapon: None
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Mollis can use summon swarm once per day per level of the cleric in place of turning undead.

Mollis has no stable form appearing as a mass of ooze and slime. Mollis is usually worshipped by aboleths and other aberrations which it is said he created, though other races may also revere him. Clerics of Mollis tend to become mentally unstable through communion with their dark god, an affect that Mollis takes joy and pride in. Mollis unlike many of his brethren has not taken a side in the conflict between Morgath and Baltor.
Morgath
The Dark Lord
The Great Deceiver
Symbol: A blood red moon
Alignment: True Evil
Worshippers: Anyone of Evil Alignment
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil
Favored Weapon: Light or Heavy Flail
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Morgath may cast Blight once per day per level of the cleric as a special ability. This replaces the normal turn undead ability.

Morgath is the great deceiver who led the great rebellion against Unnor and corrupted the children of Unnor. He is a foul creature that is usually depicted as a shadowy figure surrounded by flames with goat-like horns, a serpentine tail, and great bat-like wings. Currently Morgath is held prisoner within the center of Tarreas moon. He can still command his minions and grant spells to his followers. Most of his followers dedicate themselves to enslaving the weak though there are some who wish to destroy the world so Morgath can reform it in his own image. Most of the followers of Unnor are not organized into a formal church with various independent cults operating in secret, but there is a more organized group called the Doombringers that have secret temples scattered throughout Arnu.
Odicor
The Dwarf Master
Symbol: An Iron Fist
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Worshippers: Black Dwarves
Cleric Alignments: Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil
Favored Weapon: War Hammer and Battle Axe
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Odicor possess the Weapon Specialization ability as if they were a fighter of equal level instead of the turn undead ability.

Odicor is the deceiver of the dwarven race claiming to be their true creator. Most Black dwarves believe this and Odicor uses this ruse to influence dwarves to war both among themselves and with other races. He is depicted as a large dwarf with an axe in place of his right hand. His head and face are concealed beneath a great helm. Odicor has decided to side with Morgath in the demonic conflict within Arnu.
Ysmoor
The Snake King

Father of Serpents
Symbol: A jade serpent
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshippers: Serpent-men
Cleric Alignments: Neutral Evil and Chaotic Evil
Favored Weapon: Long sword or spear
Follower Abilities: Clerics of Ysmoor have the ability to Charm Snakes as with the spell Charm Person or Animal once per day per level of the cleric.

Ysmoor is the creator of the serpent-men. He is dedicated to the utter corruption of humanity and drives his children to enslave all other races in Arnu. He is usually depicted as a man with the head of a serpent or as a writhing mass of snakes.
Other Powers

This is just a small sample of the possible gods of darkness within Arnu. Almost any high level demon may attempt to gain followers and most do. What was listed here are again the most well known. The Castle Keeper is free to design additional faiths and cults that may exist on the fringes of civilization or even within sprawling cities.

Hey great patience with the mountain ranges. Those always take forever. I would post some of mine but I'm just too lazy to scan them so that we can share notes.

Lately, I've just been using CC3, the new high res graphics are pretty nice.

JB,

Fantastic work! Really, that is a great document. I perrused it, but planning on reading the whole thing tomorrow. I love the layout; classic, straight-forward with complete setting material. Reminds me of the old days and what more of today's game companies should publish. I love the length of the document, nearly perfect (32 mapges would be perfect IMHO).

Great stuff, just excellent.

Much respect.

I plan on creating more stuff for this setting, but will be slow going due to school starting (I homeschool my daughter). I also work part time and act as "Mr. Mom" as my wife works full time and goes back to school for her nursing degree.
