Need Ideas on how to referee lycanthropy

Post by Naleax »

I'm curious if anyone has had expereience with refereeing PC's afflicted with lycanthropy.

I am a player in a game where one of the PC's has been afflicted with lycanthropy, to be more specific he turns into a wereboar.

This PC is a 3rd level Half-Orc Fighter with already insane stats. But the addition of the wereboar has unbalanced the game. The DM is aware of this and trying to repair the situation. However i'm curious if anyone has had any experience with lycanthropy in their games and how they referee it.

The PC that is afflicted, is using the lycanthropy as a boon more than an affliction. Do you think when the disease takes effect that the DM should then take over the players character?

My first thoughts are that the player should be hindered by this affliction. Perhaps his charisma is lowered from the affliction or his strength and constitution are lowered after spending all night as a wereboar. Anything that would want the player to cure his character rather than keep the affliction because it makes him a power house.

Any ideas or experiences with similar scenarios would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Naleax

Unless the CK wants to make you all uber powered Wereboars he should make the player hand over the character sheet and roll up a new character.

It doesn't work any other way. Either everyone becomes weres, or the wereboar becomes an NPC in the CK's inventory.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

If the other PCs are getting nervous about this "beast" in their party, they could take matters into their own hands and slay the character. Even during the day. Him being cursed and all.

I have no trouble allowing were creature PC's in my game. No more than allowing a druids shape change, coupled with a ring of fire resistance and regeneration.

Or even just the plain shape change.

Assign an XP penalty percentage to the characters progression if you must find some sort of limiting factor. The logic could be that the character is slowing down 'learning' his chosen profession because he's having to cope with this new thing.

At first the wereboar should only transform at the time of the full moon, unwillingly and never, ever on command, and while transformed would be under the control of the CK.

Maybe after three levels as a lycanthrope, the character might (might) get it under control enough so that he can stop the transformation, or at least keep his mind enough during it so that he won't go on a rampage... but with any combat, he would certainly lose control, and go over to the control of the CK.

After another three levels he should gain enough control to almost certainly keep from transforming, and maybe gain some control while not under the full moon to transform at will... but again, should always have to check, perhaps a wisdom or charisma save, every combat or every hour while transformed, or lose control, and be turned over the the CK.

When a PC becomes a lycanthrope, it is never a benefit... it should always be a curse!

The character should be compelled to engage in boarish activity when transformed ( under the CK's control ). Rooting up gardens, gluttonous eating binges, and scaring locals and livestock.

This activity could lead to a reward being offered to stop the wereboars rampages. Maybe a reward tempting to the other pc's.

A CK could have a lot fun with a lycanthrope in a party.

A little insanity brought on by the "were"-ness will slowly degenerate his PC into a raving lunatic that can't be controlled!!

Huh. You ever get the feeling everyone else in your party is a wereboar?

Or he could just be tiresome at parties.
