Quickstart rules Large Shield

Post by Lord Dynel »

I was perusing the Quickstart rules (about to pass them on to prospective players) and I noticed something a little odd.
Quote:
Shield, 3 gp +1

Shield, Large 7 gp +2

It shows a "shield" giving a +1 AC and a "Large Shield" giving a +2. Is this some sort of error? I just don't want my players to come back and say that their large shields are supposed to give them a +2 to AC when, according to the PHB, it doesn't.

I'm assuming the PHB is correct, with all the shields giving a +1, just the amount of foes it can block differentiating them.

Gremlins got into the Quickstart Rules. Go by the PH.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yeah, I have pointed this out a couple of times, but it has yet to be changed. Actually, I prefer the idea that a Large Shield grants +2 AC, so I generally use that as a house rule instead. In AD&D a Large Shield can optionally grant +2 AC versus missiles.

For the purposes of the Quickstart Rules, the Large Shield bonus of +2 to AC is probably correct. Instead of going into the depth of the PHB rules regarding shields, the Quickstart rules merely simplify the situation by giving a flat +2 bonus.

That's actually what I originally thought. However, I would think that it would only add to confusion later (along with bemoaning from PCs who lose a point of armor). I would probably rule it like the PHB, if it comes down to it.

But I think you may be right.
