My take on the Witch (new class)

Post by Lord Dynel »

It's kind of funny. I had a great idea over the weekend - I'll make a witch class! Now there's a good idea!
Well, I got 95% through it and realized that someone had already done a witch (the Colin Sez version). I figured, "What the heck, I'm almost done with this, I may as well finish." I will admit, that at first glance they look similar in many aspects (the mention of sympathetic magic and the spell list in particular) but there are many differences. All told, I like mine better.
Anyhow, if anyone's interested, here's my take on the Witch. Let me know what you all think (assuming you take a look at it) and any ways I might improve it.

EDIT: See post below for a revised Witch pdf (and reasons for revision).

I like your Witch a lot. Her abilities are completely true to the source material, and not just a collection of random powers. She's powerful, but pays for it with a flavorful drawback (the Witch's Focus) and high XP requirements. I generally like your choice of spell selection, although I might make Polymorph a 4th-level spell for Witches - turning people into animals is iconic for witches in folklore, after all. Overall, an excellent effort.

Cool. Though is the xp jump from 11th to 12th supposed to be 1 million?

and where's the broom riding! (j/k)

Oh, thanks for catching that! That was an error, and that's now fixed.

Thanks clavis! I agree with your Polymorph suggestion and have made corrections to the spell list as follows:

Moved Scare to 2nd level

Moved Polymorph to 4th level

Added Magic Jar to 5th Level spell list

Lowered Telepathic Bond to 5th level

Raised Mass Suggestion to 6th level

Removed Comprehend Languages (formerly 2nd level spell - see below)

A lot of these moves revolved around moving Polymorph, but some I looked at and thought they needed a change. Regarding Comprehend Languages - I thought of putting it back on the list, at 1st level, and removing Faerie Fire altogether...any suggestions?

Either way, here's a revised witch with the above changes to the EPP and spell list.

Again, I hope you all enjoy!

Great! I've been meaning to make a hedge-witch class for my campaign, but you've saved me the work. Thanks.

Feel free to help yourself to any of the new classes (or monsters, or anything else) on my Campaign wiki

Looks pretty good. I'll give it a good read through tonight.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dyn!

Clavis, some cool ideas there! I especially like the Arcane Focus Idea for your warrior-wizard.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Keep any and all critiques coming.

I've always loved writing up some sub-rules systems, character classes, and the like for game systems. Since this on was well received, I might post some other things I was working on.

I'm working on a Alchemist myself, heavily drawing upon the Bards Games version. Unfortunately playing the Alchemist would be like playing a game all in itself.

I intend it to be only a NPC though.

I actually picked that up recently, Treebore. I owned it long ago, but that was in my, "Buy AD&D stuff now, worry about if it's a good product later," days. I might have cracked it open once back then. I've been looking through it now and realize that it's actually quite fascinating. Excellent stuff. I'll be looking forward to seeing a C&C take on the Alchemist.

Almost makes me want to post the old "web enhancement" file again.
