Seige Checks and Examples

Post by Piperdog »

I am really interested to see how some of you are creatively using the Seige Engine mechanic. Anybody use it to allow special combat manuevers? If so, coud you post how you go about it? What about examples of pushing attributes and so on? I would love to hear it!

Archery. I allow a dex or a wisdom check for an archer to make a tricky shot. The amount they roll over the target number, is the amount of bonus they get.

Here are a few that I remember off hand as happening in my games.

Feint: Make a Charisma check to negate the AC bonus from a shield.

Jump Shot: For charging without moving the required distance. Make a Dex check and jump against a wall, tree, up and off a table, etc, pushing off for that extra oomph of a charge without all the running.

Clobber: Str check to double STR bonus for damage on next attack.

Instinct Fighting: Instead of relying on STR or DEX, some rely on their instincts to get them through a crisis. WIS check to replace your WIS bonus for STR or DEX for the combat.

Shield tactics ,wall/tortus ala 300. St/Dex provides + ac based on # of success in the unit.

I use SIEGE for opposed rolls. Gambling, Arm Wrestling, Surprise rolls, etc. But I use SIEGE with a base 15 and +5 for primes so that I actually CAN do the opposed rolls. I also use degrees of success. If you, for example, are competing against another adventurer in a caber toss it would be a strength check against base DC15 (since it's opposed). You roll to see if you beat the DC and actually dont embarrass yourself but also to see if you beat the opponent. If you beat the opponent you edge him out in the toss, but if you beat him by 5 or more you might have set a new caber tossing record or something similarly nifty. It works for us.

I've (under the old name) already posted some extended combat maneuvers, which rely on either attack rolls, or SIEGE checks. Link
