If an ooze is constricting a character, and another character strikes the ooze, do both the ooze and the first character take damage?

Oooze knows? Depends on the situational circumstances I imagine.

I would think that if a character declares that they are taking care in how they strike against the ooze constricting the character then damage to the friendly can be avoided. If they simply strike at the ooze without regard for their companion, then some damage carrying over would be appropriate, such as full damage against the ooze and 1/2 or 1/3 of the damage result also inflicted on the friendly.

I would have to say that unless a character specifically states that he's trying not to hit his friend, I'd say maybe 1/4 of the damage goes to the friend. If he's trying to be careful, I'd apply a -4 (or perhaps only a -2...depends on what mood I'm in ) to hit.

I love this game for this very reason - on the fly, yet sensible, adjudication.

Its situations like this where I like subdual damage.

In this specific situation I would also say that using blunt weapons would not do any harm to the grappled individual and only harm the grappler. Edged weapons would definitely be able to go through the ooze in my opinion.

As CK, I would ordinarily rule the PC takes damage if the ooze is damaged. If the attacking player stated he was trying to be extra careful to avoid hurting the PC, I'd probably reduce the damage done to the ooze on a successful hit.

What about the poor grappled pc?
Yeah, maybe if players say nothing give full damage, but if they try to be careful half damage to the ooze and no damage to the PC.

It would, IMO, depend on the size of the ooze. A Large ooze could constrict a PC while leaving plenty of the rest of itself open to attack. A smaller one (S/M) would be harder to hit without possibly harming the victim.

A quick & dirty ruling:

Small Ooze: 50-50 split of damage

Medium Ooze: 75-25 (most to ooze)

Large+ Ooze: no damage to victim unless that area specifically targeted, then use the 75/25 split for M.

No real reason, just seems to make sense to me.

In d20 there's no penalty for attacking a PC in a grapple with a melee attack. Only a ranged attack which has a 50% chance of hitting the PC. You might house rule it like that...

50% chance to hit your grappling/grappled target with a ranged weapon modified by +/- 10% for each point of DEX bonus...

Has worked well for me anyway.
