Fighting "techniques"

Post by imneuromancer »

To sum up and then extend several other peoples' suggestions on various fighting "techniques," here are suggestions on how to simplify and integrate two-weapon fighting into the game:

THE FOUR FIGHTING STYLES:

1) Shield Use: Classes proficient in shields get a +1 AC when using them (i.e. +2 for a normal shield instead of a +1). Classes not proficient get only the +1 AC bonus, as well as any other negative consequences for using a shield.

2) Two-weapon fighting: take the damage/affect from one of the weapons. If you have DEX as a Prime, gain a +2 "to hit" bonus. If you don't have DEX as a prime, add +1. Note that you only get ONE attack instead of doubling the attacks per RAW.

3) Two-handed Weapon: If you have STRENGTH as a prime, add +1 to damage. If you do not, do normal weapon damage.

4) One-handed style: If you have DEX as a Prime and are using a weapon that can parry (generally swords, but GM option), you can GIVE GROUND (below)

GIVING GROUND:

As a move action, you can "give ground" to opponents that are attacking you. You gain a +2 to AC and move up to 1/2 of your movement backwards. Your opponent can follow, even if it exceeds their normal movement score. If the character givnig ground cannot move backwards (they are on a cliff, hanging from a rope, etc.) then they cannot give ground.

At the GM's option, A person waiting for a charge with a long weapon can give ground instead of going first, gaining the +2 to AC instead of the first attack. This violates the "using a weapon that can parry" rule in point #4 above.

Note that in a combat with two opponents both attacker and defender can "give ground" and move back, then forward. This simulates the parrying and movement in (say) a sword fight, fencing, etc. Giving Ground simulates the more "swashbuckler" style that light swords and other weapons allow.
