This is one heck of a monster . .

Post by Tadhg »

So, the PCs in your group are doing well and defeating the monsters you throw at them maybe a little too well. What to do?

Him:
Ogre Mage!!

This guy can kick some ASS!!
I was paging through the M&T and fell upon this great monster from the OD&D Greyhawk Supplement (the old Japanese ogre mage the AD&D MM has a pic).

Size large

HD 5 (d8) +5

AC 18

Attacks: Slam (1d12)

Regeneration

Spells: invisibility, darkness, polymorph self, charm person, sleep, gaseous form . . . AND

Blast of rime (cone of cold) 8d8 pts. of damage (dex save to reduce by )!!!!

Oh yeah, did I mention he can FLY! Hehe, 40ft. Muhahahahahahahaha!
I love it.

Not tough enough? Place some regular ogres nearby for the OM to command!!

Still not strong enough against your PCs? Go with Garys suggestion in the GH Sup re: Combination Monsters . . put the OM on a manticore and let the fun begin!!

"Blast of rime"? Is he a rapper so bad that hearing him flow causes 8d8 points of damage? Is the "cone of cold" reference supposed to imply Vanilla Ice is an ogre mage?
(If only I were as funny as I think I am...)

I picked up an ogre mage mini from Reaper a little while back (haven't painted though). It got me thinking about setting up an encounter or adventure around one. Not sure what level the party should be before I make them deal with such a critter plus minions. Right now, they are 2nd-3rd level.

Hehe, my group is 2/3 level also and I'm pretty sure the ogre mage would destroy them, possibly without me adding a few regular ogres; and that's really because they are relatively new to RPGs and may not be ready.

If your group are veteran players and depending on the size, they might be able to bring it down. Could be a great battle!

Ogre Magi are potent, obviously inspired by tales of Oni before that / they was / were written as a creature of its own.

I have some very experienced players, but they can also be kinda stupid. They have a tendency to figure that a frontal assault will solve most problems. I'll probably hold off on the OM until the at least get some 2nd level spells and better saves.
EDIT: Hey, quick Q. It says OMs have Regen but doesn't give a number. What is there Regen? 2?

Hmm, yeah I noticed that. I would assume regen 1 as explained in the M&T page 5, but I suppose you could make it 2 just a well.

Nice flexibility for CKs along with all the other things you can do with the OM!

The Ogre-Mage is one of my favorite monsters, alone they make a great foe for lower level PCs, in groups they a good foes for higher level PCs.

I remember the Ogre Mage well.

I recall an incident in our AD&D campaign from '82-'83 where an ogre mage snuck into our camp using his gaseous form and then reformed and lopped off the head of one our fighters as he was groggily waking up from the disturbance. We were using hit location/hp distribution at the time and the ogre mage made a very good roll!
Needless to say, most of us were laughing our arses off, but the guy that was playing the fighter wasn't. We were able to fight off the OM - in fact, I think we ended up killing the bugger after a good, long fight.

I think I finally talked Jim Holloway into doing a version of it for the website and possible prints. I'll let you know more as it develops!

LOL. This must be a universal RPG reaction . . it's always hilarious when someone else's PC dies!!
