Help wanted: Puzzle ideas?

Post by CKDad »

My face-to-face game these days is run for my son & his friends - 4 or 5 boys, all 11 or 12 years old. While they're having fun beating up on the hostile creatures, I'd like to mix things up and throw a few simple puzzles at them soon.

While I have one in mind for the door of a crypt they're about to enter - loosely based off one in David Brin's Glory Season - I'm drawing a blank otherwise in the inspiration department. Suggestions or recommendations for resources most welcome!

The National Treasure movies have some neat puzzle locks.

three dials numbered 1-4...the key to the lock being the prime numbers.

Or use three color wheels with the six colors of the rainbow...the combination being the three with the same number of letters (which happens to be six letters by the way)

Kingdom of the crystal skull. A stone plinth that goes to the ceiling on a raised pedestal with round bas-relief masks or what around its base (made of clay). Breaking the masks releases sand or water allowing the plinth to sink, raising the door (counterweight principle)

A bas-relief of some hideous face with empty or gemmed eyes...around the room are candles with flat mirrors behind them...rotate all the mirrors to direct the beams of light into the eyes of the mask.

for some suggestions.

A series of tiles (on wall or floor), each with a geometric/abstract design that represents a phase of the moon (Full, Waning Gibbous, Waning Half, Waning Crescent, New, Waxing Crescent, Waxing Half, & Waxing Gibbous) but in scrambled order. They need to press/step on/etc. the tiles in the correct sequence from New to Full.

A quote from the back cover of the WotC book Book of Challenges:

"The greatest threat to any adventuring party is a devious Dungeon Master."

How true.
