Into C&C!
Into C&C!
Okay, so I have this friend of mine who C&C seems to be the perfect system for, it is all he seeks in a system and still, old school style. His birthday is getting near and I am willing to give him one book as a gift, and get one for me as well.
I am mainly looking at the Player's book, specially if it does follow the D&D/AD&D style when it comes to Player's/DM/Monster books. Things is, there seems to be 3 different versions available, the 1st priting, the 2nd printing and the condensed version.
So, which one should i get, why and what is different in those three? I don't really need a list of things that are changed, but rough ideas, i have read a lot on C&C around the web and trtolllord site and have a good idea of how the system is, I can even say the Character Sheet says it all.
So, what do you have to say?
Cheers,
Nifelhein.

I say welcome, Nifelhein. 2nd print PH is probably the way to go.
Enjoy the game!

Actually, it is a full game, it just doesn't have all the classes, races, & spells. But it does contain all the rules to play the game, just with fewer choices.[/i]
And I agree - if you're set on those three choices, the 2nd printing PHB is the way to go.

And to help you make sure which version you're getting:
The first printing reads, "The Fantasy Role Playing Game", is copyrighted 2004, and has Steve Chenault's (rather illegible) signature towards the right side of the picture in the "Where Roll Playing and Roleplaying Meet" section (the foreward). As well, things like the Chapter Names, Table of contents, etc are printed the same way as regular text is, merely larger.
The second printing omits the "the" and reads, "Fantasy Role Playing Game", is copyrighted 2006, and Steve Chenault's signature (readable this time ) is to the left of the picture in the "Where Rollplaying and Role Playing Meet" section (the foreward). As a side note, yes it does look like they changed the way the spelled "roleplaying" and "rollplaying" between the two printings.
The Introduction to the 2nd printing has a crest included that the text wraps around. As well, the Chapter Headings are done with a blackbar across the top, and the title of the chapter in white text. Also has a character sheet in the back, which the first printing doesn't.
Reading the first printing didn't especially bother me, but reading the 2nd printing was easier.

Actually, getting the 2nd printing is very very easy, considering the Trolls are absolutely out of the 1st. However, the best way to determine a 1st print from a 2nd print is to read the spine, where the number TLG blahblah 2 will be seen, where blahblah is some number (I think 8010). Additionally, the 2nd printing is much better, in terms of layout and grammar, than the 1st, plus it incorporates several errata mistakes found in the 1st printing. Last thing: you might want to consider the C&C Box Set, as it is a very good "intro" to C&C, giving some monsters to play with, a module to run, and dice (as I recall), though it is not the "full C&C" (lower number of races and classes to play). Between all the options is the same information... all of them will showcase the versatility and flexibility of C&C, so you cannot go wrong with any of them!

I would recommend the PHB 2nd Printing, great layout, easy to read, oh and several pages of Peter Bradley artwork. Especially the Druid, that picture total rocks!

Hmm, I keep forgetting about the C&C condensed version PDF, since I have everything else and wouldn't need this. But after looking at it, this also seems like a good introduction. Free download of Rising Knight and it's a complete night of gaming to check out C&C! 8)

To add to the overwhelming response...
The Player's Handbook 2nd Printing is definately the way to go. Don't get me wrong... the Box Set (I mention it only because Angelius did) is nice but I believe it also has fewer classes. The box set is purely nostalgic!

Yeah, sorry about my manners, thanks for all the welcome, I posted rather in a hurry and forgot to say Hi to all old timers here, paying my respects now
I really feel C&C might be my game of choice for any fantasy play with a D&D feel, it is simple, plain and compatible with all D&D editions, specially with the good old stuff that have been how we got started in roleplaying.
I am betting he will love the present, specially after reading through it. I am not really set in those three as my choice, I just thought that by giving him a book that allows him to completely picture the game in his head, with combat, classes and spells, he would have a good knowledge of it and decide if he would want to get on board this or not.
I would love to give him the deluxe pack, first because unlike the collector's edition it is complete, second because all books at once is perfect, but i can't really afford it, or to tell the truth, i can, but then I won't have a single copy of any book of C&C and won't get any other book I want...
I am not sure I want to envy my own gift to him.
I have to buy books online and this will either be through amazon or trolllord website (in the case of a deluxe pack, if I don't resist the urge), so ISBN is all that I can rely upon, specially in the case of Amazon, for they have 1st printing listed as available, release date kind of soles the issue though.
And thanks for the overwhelming response, I really hope to convert him, and through him about 10 or so more that play in his games, not to mention I would lvoe to send another one of these to another friend, who is now married and living in Sweden (I am from Brazil).
Cheers,
Nif.
Edit: the urge to get myself a deluxe pack and giv him a 2nd printing player's book is going stronger, specially because i can show him what else he can get out of the game...

I recommend ordering direct from the Trolls, I've always had luck and it only takes a week to get the package.

Hey CK, I'd definately agree if you're living within the States. Unfortunately, if you are outside the States, it might take longer. In my case, I reside in Canada, and I'm still waiting for something that I believe would have been sent out around the 1st or 2nd of August. So it's been about 3 weeks for me but I figure that the method of shipping may be different that what is usually used since I'm out of the country.
Despite that though, unless Amazon is ready to ship within 24 hours, it might *still* be faster through the TLG!

Let me add my (light) weight to the proceedings.
Out of the two possibilities, the individual books (PH, M&T) are the best bet if you are (almost) convinced that he will pick it up and run with it. This is due to the fact that there is more in the individual books, more classes, more races, spell details rather than summaries and so on. If you are unsure, the condensed version gives you an excellent introduction but will (in my opinion) cause you to buy the books as well if you continue with it.
As an addendum: I used to play Basic, then 1e, 2e, 3e and finally 3.5e. I used to play with the same set of friends in Basic/1e/2e but we drifted apart. Family, university, work and so on. I am about to start an online compaign (skype+klooge) with those same friends some *cough* 20 years later and the only thing that convinced them to come out of retirement was C&C.
Good luck with your purchases! I suggest you will have an excellent time. (Roll a d20, you want high... )

Well, shipping to Brazil usually cost half as much as books themselves, and Amazon has some of the other books I want listed as shipping in 4 to 7 weeks, I have had a lot of experience of that time being listed and them shipping it right away though.
I also know of noble knight games, but they don't seem to have the 2nd printing book, so they are not an option, though I usually compaare their price with amazon before placing an order, if I get any big discount in a single book, they loose, else, they are somehow close to eah other.
This frriend of mine has a lot more money than I do and if he likes the game he will probably order whatever he finds out to be a must have (possibly M&T, Castle Zygag), so i am really more into presenting him the system and let him decide whether he want more out of it, or not.
As always, thanks for the feedback.
One thing, the binding of the Player's book is hardcover, softcover or library binding? I have found soft for the 1st printing and the other two for the 2nd printing in amazon...

There are no softcover rulebooks for C&C. The first and second printing are hardbacks (modules are softcover.) I don't know what a "library binding" is, so I won't say that's what the books are or are not. Amazon is notorious for listing products that don't exist yet... they even say they can get the CKG, which is not yet available, so don't trust them to have 100% accuracy.

It definitely sounds like you should enjoy C&C. Hopefully your friend and others will too.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
