New Class: Lo-Fan
New Class: Lo-Fan
A while back we were discussing oriental classes and someone mentioned that most of the OA material is too Japan-centric. So to try to remedy that and have some fun with stereotypes, I wrote up two classes for you to evaluate.....
The inspiration here is a Mongol / Gengis Kahn type steppes horseman barbarian* type. Lo-Fan is the Chinese word for Barbarian, so that's an easy fit.
* having just read the WIki article, I'm not sure the term "barbarian" is fair, but um.. yeah. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_Empire
I think this may work? what tweaks do y'all suggest?

LO-FAN (Oriental Barbarian, Mongol horseman type)
Prime Attribute: Strength
Hit Dice: d10 (+4 after 10th level)
Alignment: any
Races: Human, Rhinotaur, Tree Folk, Elf, Half-elf
Weapons: all
Armor & Shields: all
Abilities: Bow Training, Brawler, Horse Mastery, Ride Hard, Run like the Wind, Scale, Survival
Bow Training: +1 with all bows.
Brawler: Lo-Fan are more skilled at unarmed fighting than the average warrior. They can make one attack per round that inflicts 1d4 subdual damage. At 3rd level, this increases to 1d3 true damage; at 7th level, to 1d4 damage, at 12th level, to 1d6 damage. They also enjoy a +1 bonus to grappling and overbearing attacks.
Horse Mastery: As the Knight ability Horsemanship; except remove Charge, and replace with Running Start Lo-Fan can leap into saddle and spur mount to full movement rate in same round without making a skill check.
Ride Hard (Wisdom): Lo-Fan can spur mount to +10 movement rate with a WIS check. Mount will continue this faster movement for 1d6 rounds. The Lo-Fan can not attempt this feat again for 10 rounds. In overland travel, the Lo-Fan can urge mount to travel 120% of its usual daily travel distance, but it then must rest for at least a day, and to ride again the following day, the Lo-Fan needs another mount.
Run Like the Wind: At 1st level, the Lo-Fan adds +10 to the Move rate for their race.
Scale (Dex) and Survival (Wis): as Ranger
EPP: As Ranger, as a starting point

For flavor issues I think they should be limited to +5 armor or less and small shields.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Good point, you can't really leap into the saddle in full plate.
That would also encourage the use of the horsemanship maneuvers.
Great suggestion!

Yeah it's a tricky one.
REH had described hyrkanians as pretty much born in the saddle, spending their lives eating, sleeping and fighting there, to the point they were bowlegged and almost unable to fight well off of the horse.
Then Subotai comes along and runs on foot for three days straight.

DD,
I was thinking of starting them with regular damage for punch but wanted them to be significantly less skilled than a monk with unarmed attacks.... I think RAW nonmonks do 1d2 subdual with unarmed attacks?

Yeah , but saying a Hyrkanian fights less well-skilled off a horse then on one still leaves a lot open to interpretation since they were utter battases in the saddle.
