Don't have time to read it now, but it already sounds cool!

Go0gle, interesting class!
If you want my criticism, keep reading.
I think the HP/level should be +2, and not +3. I also think the XP requirements are a little high - I'd put them a little more in line with a rogue, or maybe cleric (don't have the book in front of me at the moment, though). It almost seems to me to be a little more like a NPC class than a PC class, but that's just the vibe I got. Maybe it's lacking a little meat for me, I don't know. These are just my observations, Go0gle, and I hope I didn't offend.
Anyway, I must say it is an interesting and unique class!

No worries LD. It was pretty late at night for me when this kinda lit up in my head, so it is not as fleshed out as I normally have done or as coherent.
yeah...I'll probably go back and redo the xp and hp progression.
May tweak their abilities too with one or two things. Just looking at input now.
They are definitely more a utility class rather than a combat class though by intent, sort of an alternative to a rogue.
The class needs a percentage chance, per level, of permanently becoming insane.
Naw...that would be entirely TOO accurate.
I have tweaked it a bit and added an ability though. Still seems weak...and I'm not wanting to add any firearms. Considering alchemical grenades though. *insane laughter*

Okay...changed the class a bit more. Got rid of the redundant abilities and increased their ranged combat ability slightly. It's still a weak combatant.
This class should really come into its own if PCs are captured or assaulting the castle...and be able to function in the trap/unsafe detection role as well as opening mechanical locks if no thief is present (or if the thief has already been messed up).
The same link at the beginning of this thread will hit the updated write-up

It looks a lot better, IMHO, Go0gle. It still seems to be missing something, but I can't put a finger on it. Maybe it's just me att his point. The improvements looks pretty good, though!

I think this is a good Roleplay-heavy character, not a good hack and slash class... depends on the campaign style.

I like it, especially as a class for Gnomes.

If it's looking as a role-playing class, then that's good. Those can be more fun to play than a meat grinder type since it means you have to be more engaged in the game...assuming of course the presiding CK is not strictly a meat grinder runner.

Yeah, I definitely say it's a roleplaying class, and I agree that rp classes can be loads of fun in the right circumstance One player of mine once played an expert - which is basically a skill-based class for those not in the know - in a D&D game and had a blast.
I've been thinking about this and maybe instead of the Open Locks ability, give them a "jury rig" or "tinkering" or "[fill in the blank]" ability that can go along with anything mechanical (traps, locks, and anything else in you campaign). With the ability, he could disarm it, change it so conventional means couldn't open it (in other words the original lock holder couldn't open a lock because the engineer "changes" the lock mechanism) and just about any thing else the CK would allow. This might even mean making simple clockwork or spring-driven devices and such. I don't know...just a thought.

Dwarfs in my World of the Doldrums had a "mechanics" ability that gave them a wide berth of abilities:
Mechanics (Intelligence): Dwarfs are highly skilled in the use of metals and applied sciences such as thermic theory and metallurgy. This ability effectively combines the rogue abilities of lockpicking and traps, though non-mechanical traps suffer a -10 penalty to locate, disarm, or set. In addition, a dwarf can ascertain special features about structures, especially those of a subterranean nature; the specific nature of these details is left to the Castle Keeper to decide, but include such things as ventilation, lighting, stability, age, and so forth.

I considered giving them a Clockwork Companion ability...sort of like a mechanical squirrel or dog....but felt that might limit them even more.
The Improvise could be expanded to include the modification of existing traps, locks, and devices truth be told so that only the engineer knows how to open or operate them safely.
But I suppose you could combine Open Locks and Traps into the "mechanical" ability you're talking about LD. *ponders* The Stonework couldn't go there since that really is more of a different discipline.
I like the text on that Serl. Okay to borrow it?
