Thief/Rogue percentage skills
Thief/Rogue percentage skills
Our first session of C&C went very well - seems to be a hit.
One player is playing a thief and has, ever since 3e came along, lamented the loss of the 1e/2e percentage system for thief skills. We thought this might be a good opportunity to bring them back since he enjoys them so much. I realize this would take these skills away from the SIEGE engine for resolution. Has anyone tried this? If so, how did you implement it and how did it work out?

I've never done it, but I don't see any reason why you can't just import the 1e thief skills charts wholesale. When playing C&C modules, you are going to see challenge levels for things like locks and traps that you will need to take into account, but there would be no conversion issues when running your own stuff.

I think a good rule of thumb is ever + or -1 =5%...
this is assuming the d20 ... 20 = 100% just divide the 100 by 20.
should work out, if a Challenge Level to pick a lock is +4, that's -20% on his roll.(if I recall 2e correctly, you'd penalize or add bonus to the thief's roll, and try to get UNDER their skill % total, right? If not, the +1 = 5% will still work, just do it correctly.

I agree.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Multiply the base siege engine numbers and progressions by 5%. Gets you to exactly the same place, but you can roll it via percentages instead.

What Relaxo and Peter and said would work quite well. I'd also feel the charts from the older books (blasphemy!) would work quite well. I keep everything SIEGE, but if it would keep a player happy, then that's all that matters.

I actually wrote something up to this effect on these boards a while back. But the entire thread seemed to have vanished, and I even had it stickied.

I tend to agree, If I was to do this, I'd simply port the chart over as is.

Porting over teh 1e chart sounds the simplest, but I like the 2nd ed customizability so every rogue isn't hte same.

I highly agree with using the 2nd Edition over 1st Edition for the reason of the customization ability. Like you said, it would allow for different rogues with different specalties.

I could. I even saved it in a file, somewhere. I just need to dig it out again.

I remember that topic. Good stuff. I'm going to talk to my sister, the party thief, about maybe trying this. My game is C&C with a whole bunch of 1e, 2e, and 3e ideas sprinkled in. I always enjoyed the 1e/2e thief way of doing things as much as the SIEGE engine so maybe Friday's game she can try this?
Thanks to Pete for posting it and Serl for unearthing it.
