The Crusade Begins

Post by allensh »

I ordered a PHB 2.0 and M&T through a game retailer (I got ten bucks off the combined purchase...I'm cheap ) and they arrived today. I have looked over both of them and I have to say, they are excellent. Tomorrow night I commence running the game for the first time. I am choosing between B1: In Search of The Unknown and The Sunless Citadel at present. I'm still a little fuzzy on how to calculate the XP value of monsters not in M&T, for example those Twig Blights, but if nothing else I'll fudge it (or someone can talk me through that monster if you have the time). In any event, the books are awesome and I am really looking forward to running this!

Welcome to the crusades!

As far as your XP problem goes.. just wing it.. Check some low creatures like goblins and give that Twig Blight the same XP reward..

That's what I do when I use monsters from other source! Although using monsters from AD&D Monsters Compedium saves me a lot of time!

Thanks again Moriarty... my CK sources Guru!

I did play AD&D some back in the 1st edition days, but more during 2nd. I did play a lot of what is erroneously called "Basic D&D" though. I'd actually prefer to run B2 but this module will serve

Welcome! Although I am OLD-school (won't tell you how old) I've never played B2. I have played the Sunless Citadel though and enjoyed it. In fact, the 3e series of modules (at least the early ones) are all good modules. They just lost the plot later on.

Let us know how it goes won't you? I myself begin CKing tonight also. 8)

Wing it? No, everything is finely calculated to provide an experience equivalent to fellow players and not to disturb the equilibrium.

Honest.

Good luck to you, sir! I'm all prepped and ready to go, and even have a few special touches of my own ready to insert into the module thanks to one M. Grimtooth . It should be a fun time.

My party of four (Cleric, Ranger, Monk and Rogue) was reduced to a party of one (Monk) by eight orcs. The monk ran away big time. He plans to lead another party into the caves to avenge his friends.

Wooaa... That seems strangely familiar... Of course it was in 3.5 and the monk kept bragging he had a speed of 60+ feet per round.. O he used it, once we were all dead... Long and painful story that is...

I had a halfling monk with boots of speed once. Annoyed the hell out of everyone I did.

Yes, that is true. It says the product is missing the map though. I'll haunt Half.com and see if I can get a printed copy It would be a fun adventure to run, that's for sure.

On the other hand I did find that I still had the Return To The Keep On The Borderlands, so that is always a possibility. C&C has me digging through boxes seeing what old stuff I still have that might be useful
EDIT: Half.com comes through Found a copy for $1.99 nestled in among the people trying to get $30 for them. Says its a little beaten up and written in but all there. That's ok, it would have gotten written in anyway.

As an FYI, I was "reminded" last week that Paizo sells most, if not all, the old modules, etc... as pdf's for $4.00 each. RPGNow is usually $4.95
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

RPG NOW's module is apparently missing maps ( ) That could be a problem. Is the Paizo one better? If not, just get a copy from eBay for like $5 as well or maybe an online dealer.

Hmm, I hear this a lot. Is this a common problem with PDF from these places? I would be seriously upset if I purchased any PDF that didn't have all the maps, just like I would if I bought the print version.

Another problem that I have with PDFs is - prices! Too high. OK, I know that lots of peeps like 'em so they can write on them. But, I'm sorry. I see many of the OOP B/AD&D 1E mods on eBay for cheaper or same PDF price, even with shipping. So you buy and then photocopy it so you can write on it.

Dang, last year I bought a shrinkwrapped B2 for about $7 or $8 bucks. I didn't really need it, but for that price, what the heck?

Rhu looks over at his module bookcase and smiles at his L2 shrinkwrapped mod, among others . . .

Oh well, "to each his own".

I love PDF's because I can just print what I need. If I want an enocunter out of a module, print it! I love having the C&C Monsters & Treasures in PDF (The price on that one is a gouge) because I can print the monsters out for any module I am doing and can make notes right on the paper. Converting modules is then easy, just get list of monsters in it, and print them out to use.

I would love to see a PDF version of the C&C PHB. I use a laptop when DM'ing and PDF's at my fingers is great.

I also love having access to the PDFs but I haven't invested in the M&T PDF yet. I saw it, considered it, but haven't caved yet at that price. I eventually will I imagine. As for the PHB... a full PDF (none of the condensed stuff) would be a REAL plus.
