Converting classes from other sources

Post by Ace of Swords »

Long ago i played 1e, 3e came and i tried it...and quickly rejected it.

I switched to Hackmaster, and for a number of reasons (the hma and complexity) switched to C&C.

I love the simplicity and how tweakable the rules are.

How ever HM had a number of classes not in C&C.

I have a long standing ( 12+ year) campaign and dont want to radicaly alter anyones character.

Converting classes is pretty straight forward, the exp charts are where i am breaking down at.

The BTB classes seem to double per level, untill about 8th.

I am trying to convert the Battle Mage from HM. anyone tried this already or have a method?

From any AD&D like system, the method is simple. Reverse the AC, and run everything else on a siege check.

You might check out James Mishler's Wilderlands stuff.
http://adventuregamespublishing.blogspot.com/

He created a warrior-mage class for C&C that was in the 2008 Wilderlands Jam product, and for a while he gave out the character class in a free pdf. Shoot him an email or pm and see if you can get a copy. Might be just what you're looking for.

Unfortunately I never bought Hackmaster core rules until the new edition, so I don't have a copy of the Battlemage. So no idea what to suggest.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

EXP for Converted classes

Post by lobocastle »

Ace of Swords,

I have converted several campaigns to C&C. When I look at experience tables , I try to match the power level of the converted class with existing classes. In this case the Battle Mage would be compared to the Paladin, cleric, and Wizard for balance.

I've been wondering about Hackmaster for awhile as a source of material for conversion but have never seen the game books. Judging from the NPCs published in KoDT it should be doable.

I'm tempted to "convert" the charlatan class simply because it would be another deconstruction...

HM is mostly a straight conversion , figure out primes and remove the Hp kicker.

My trouble is with the xp charts, HM seems lighter on the xps for leveling then C&C is.

The suggestion to compare to C&C paladin xp chart seems good.

(finals week for summer school has prevented work on it)
