Looking for Piece-meal armor system

Post by Arten »

Anyone using one? I've made one up similar to the one in ElderScrolls: Morrowind, but AC is becoming much higher and I'm trying to think of ways to let Bth keep up with it as levels go up. A full set of leather is about +6 AC.

The system also uses the 3.0 armor types (light, mdm, hvy) and I'm not sure if I want to keep that.

Ideas?

Yeah, don't have each piece of arm and leg armor provide an AC adjustment, but have both give one. For example, if you have two leather vambraces, you get a +1, but two plate gives +3. If you happen to be using different types, you get the average, so a leather and plate foreguard gives +2. Same with leg-guards. The piece that provides the most should be breastplate. It also depends on how many pieces of armor you're allowing... as in, how detailed you want it to be, so that many might not provide any AC adjustment until there's a collective amount of them. Leather should not provide a +6 AC unless you feel wearing armor is that protective... or you like having PCs that are very hard to hit.

Yeah, I've thought of doing something like the "wearing a full set gives more, but single piece = no improvement" but I wanted to have it be a simple stackable setup. My players are pretty new to roleplaying and I wanted it quick to pickup. (Hence my plans to switch from 3.0 to C&C) Also, I thought it would be cool if mixing and matching of different pieces was possible.

I've got seven components to each kind of armor:

Cuirass

Pauldrons

Guantlets

Greaves

Boots

Helm

Shield

I've been toying with using weapon skills and having each point in a weapon group add a bonus to attack with the weapon, but I don't think it would keep up with the higher armor classes... maybe I'll just try out the basic C&C system first and see how they like it.

Thanks

if you have a copy of 2e's complete fighter handbook there is a piece system in it that coul be easily converted.

Which reminds me of my next question. How do you do called shots in this system? I use negative modifiers to the attack roll in BRP, but that seems counter intuitive with this because essentially it seems like you would have better armor by wearing nothing sometimes?
OK, I'm not making much sense, but I'm confused...

Thanks Grimm, THAT's where I saw that system, oh so long ago. I remembered it, but couldn't recall what book it was in.... now to see if I still have it somewhere.

Hmm, as far as the whole called shot thing... I think I understand what 'kitty means. Ya, hadn't thought about how called shots would be affected by the system. Maybe I'll just redo the whole thing into an armor materials thing, where you could have Blue Glass Plate or Ivory Ring Mail... not sure.
