I like this as well. For something even more nasty, give it the ability to shoot quills at an enemy - say, damage as a short bow, 10' range increments, max range 30', affects target and any adjacent targets within 3 feet.

I had considered something like that but thought it might be a tad overkill.
However, one of the joys of C&C is tinkering with things.

Sounds ferocious! It might have natural treasure, though, in the form of a really cool hide, plus teeth and claws (which might be money in some barbarian kingdoms).
When I was a kid I was on a camping trip with some folks and one was a modern day mountain man/trapper. Like all such, he loved to tell tall tales. His buckskin coat and hat were adorned with porcupine quillwork. The quills can be dyed various colors, but he was telling us that they weren't dyed, that the quills are naturally different colors, you just can't see it on the animal through the fur. Females in the summer yield red quills, males in winter blue, in spring yellow. Green is the hardest color to find, because they are only green for an hour after mating, and they only do that during December electrical storms.
So, if I ever encounter a quill bear in a campaign, and manage to survive the encounter, I'll make a point of checking the quill colors, because they could be collector's items.

Here, to make it almost the same as a real-world inspired creature:
The quills of a quill bear are sometimes linked to special reservoir sacs which are able to store toxins and other non-essential fluids produced within the quill bear for excising; the contents are not harmful in any way to the quill bear, being wholly natural, but when another creature, especially those of weaker stature such as humans and their ilk (including orcs, goblins, et cetera) come into contact, usually through harmful exposure by penetration of a connected quill, the effect is damaging and painful -- to reflect the effect in game terms, the quill bear produces a poison of Type I - VI, but only one such type determined randomly; the quantity is always low, containing at most 6 "doses." It takes one full day to replenish a single dose. The quill bear is incapable of choosing when, or whether, this poison will be made so contact with one can prove more fatal than thought. Should a quill bear have this ability (assume one in eight do), it is called a porbil.
To determine the severity of the porbil's poison-making, roll 1d12:
1 - 3: Type 1
4 - 6: Type 2
7 - 8: Type 3
9 - 10: Type 4
11: Type 5
12: Type 6

Wow...sounds like three different sub-species of the genus already!

This is actually a cool little bit of fluff. While not treasure in the sense of gold and magic, it would be something of value that may vary with whatever region or culture is present.

Could be an adventure hook.
Shamans from a neighboring barbarian tribe will not help the adventurers find the lost tomb in the mountains unless the party appeases the gods spirits what have you by killing a quill bear and returning its coat and skull to the tribe. The barbarians are the only ones who know where the hidden tomb is and guard its approach with vigor.

And another fine idea goes straight to my GM's Tricks file.
